Default Police charge 85-year-old with street racing

The man, whose name was not released, was making his way yesterday along Highway 407 when he was allegedly clocked doing 161 kilometres an hour — 61 km/h over the posted speed limit.

Quote:
“He said he was going to the bank and shopping,” said Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Cam Woolley, who noted snow and ice made road conditions treacherous at the time.
Damn senior citizens!

The article in the Globe this morning gave some more information. Apparently a police officer (lights flashing, etc) tried to stop the "kid" several times, pulling alongside, etc. The "kid" never noticed and weaved through traffic like a maniac...

Presumably there are neurological issues here. Though typically driving very slowly, and very long distances between stopped vehicles, not excessive speed are the symptoms. Hopefully he is forced to have a medical test before his licence is returned.

This story is really making the rounds now...USA Today, AP, Reuters, etc.

My favourite quote from the Reuters article:

Tough street-racing law nabs 85-year-old

Quote:
"When she [the OPP officer] informed him that his car was being impounded for a week, he said: 'God damn, you're not taking my car, are ya?'" Woolley said, adding the man later apologized for swearing, and the officer drove him to the bank.
