Default SA8300HD - HDMI & DD Audio.

last year christmas i bought a 50 panny and i got the year free HD pvr sa 8300. I have hdmi from the SA to the panny and optical from the SA to my sony receiver. How come when i go into the SA menu to turn on DD i get no sound from the tv speakers. This is bothersome because every time i want to watch a hd channel in DD through my HT i have to go into the SA menu turn on DD, then remember to turn it off when i'm done so the rest of the people in my house (tech illiterate) don't freak out when no sound is coming from the TV speakers. This used to work properly before when using component and analog cables but when i switched to the hdmi i started to have this problem.

This is one of the issues when using HDMI and is "normal". You can:

1. Go back to component.

2. Send the audio via analogue audio cables from the STB to the analogue audio inputs on the TV associated with the HDMI input (there may only be one input that allows this. This may require a user setting in the audio menu of the TV to be changed so that you hear audio via the analogue inputs, not the HDMI inputs. Some TVs do this automatically, some manually and some don't accomodate this option at all.

See: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=71112

3. Have the other people turn on the AVR so they can hear great quality sound. You may wish to consider a Harmony Remote.

Thanks 57,

i guess i will have to use the analog cables with the corresponding hdmi input, its just that i need two people to help take my plasma off the wall so i can make a cable change. i do have a harmony remote and it setup to watch tv with the HT but my family doesn't care about good sound.... i try to show them how tech can better their lives but again they don't care....

Thanks again

Don't they just push the 'watch TV' button on the Harmony remote? You could also program one of the other features of the remote that you don't use to watch TV simple mode once you set it up like 57 mentioned.
