Default Results of wireless survey at my residence

APs Detected: 21
Encryption OFF: 2
Channel 1: 4
Channel 3: 1
Channel 6: 11
Channel 7: 1
Channel 11: 4
54Mbps: 19
22Mbps: 1
11Mbps: 1
Strongest Signal: -42
Weakest Signal: -94
Short Time Slot: 18
PBCC: 2
Short Preamble: 9
CF Pollable: 1

I live in a typical subdivision of 2 story and 1 story single dwelling homes. Needless to say I was a bit surprised to find so many. I have had trouble in the past and tried different channels. Right now I am the only one on channel 3 and it is stable.

How did you assemble the list, some sort of software?

My 2 routers have a site survey function that I used initially. For the recent test I used Network Stumbler.

NetStumbler seems like a really, really cool application! I don't have a WiFi card here at work, but I have 2 different cards at home, so I hope it works on one of them. Thanks for the tip!

So Jake, is this is saying that you found 21 wireless networks and two were open?

Yes. 21 wireless access points of which 2 were wide open. In the beginning over half were open (2 years ago) . People seem to be getting the message and using encryption.

Network stumbler has a GPS logging capibility so you can drive around and log the results and create maps like here.

I would say 2 out of 21 is most impressive. Out of those 21, 20 are probably setup using WEP which can be broken by anyone with the ability to read.

I use netstumbler all the time when I am on the road.

If I need to get a photograph back to the office, I head for a subdivision and turn on Net Stumbler.

The audio feature alerts you to "open" networks.

Log into a spare Google Mail account, send pictures, log out. Can be as quick as 30 seconds.

Last Summer I drove from Collingwood to Owen sound on Highway 26, left Net Stumbler running, it records ALL the networks it sees. The results were pretty frightening. Almost 75% of all networks were wide open.

I keep a small Database on Map-point of open networks for future use........

I just setup my new wireless router last night, and without knowing anything specifically about wi-fi security, I knew enough to not simply use WEP after about 5 minutes of research via google searches.

Of course, the lack of documentation included with most routers doesn't exactly help matters - if they plug it in and it works right OOTB, that convenience is really what most people care about.
