The "XBOX360 crowd" makes up over 35% of HD-DVD owners. Maybe we need to start predicting what the "XBOX360 crowd" thinks about movie X or movie Y in hi-def?

The last number I saw was 750,000 for both standalone players plus the 360 add-on. Since the 360 add-on can only be used to play HD-DVDs, it's reasonable to include it in the HD-DVD player count.

The 360 addon is part of the "dedicated" player count but not part of the "standalone" player count.
Yes the number of "dedicated" players is supposed to be 750,000 and according to the NDP data, there are 269,000 360 addons sold putting the "standalone" number at around 481,000. How many movies could these "360 gamers" really be interested in movies though? Sure they have the hardware capable to play but does that mean they really buy a lot of movies? They must be mostly interested in games - since, afterall, the 360 is mainly a gaming machine. Last edited by darrylr; 2007-12-14 at 02:56 PM. |

Well, based on the numbers, they buy more movies than their PS3 counterparts.
The numbers I could find. Standalone BluRay: ~650,000 PS3s: ~2,000,000 Standalone HD-DVD: ~480,000 360 add-on: ~270,000. Given the approx 2:1 ratio of S/W sales for BD vs HD-DVD, it can only mean that the BD owners are buying a lot less movies per player and/or the number of PS3s that are seriously being used as players is relatively small. Or perhaps the overwhelming studio support for BD isn't all it's cracked up to be? |

Wow. That certainly could account for it especially if purchasers were matching the case picture to what they bought. Maybe it's an HD DVD fan that runs her website

The Planet Earth HD-DVD discs are not combo disks are they? If not I wonder how many will get returned?

Honestly, the Planet Earth surge points to player sales. It's the one title I always see around here and seems like a great starter movie for high def. I think that's what it is.
I can't see the Oparah Demographic out buying players either, but I could be wrong.
