Smile French adult channel "Vanessa" gets CRTC ok (starts Nov 4th)

Ooh la la! CRTC approves Sex Shop TV application

From Digital Home:

Quote:
The CRTC, the federal agency responsible for regulating broadcast and telephone communications in this country, last week approved an application by Montreal-based Sex-Shop Television to operate a French-language digital channel which will be known as Vanessa.

The adult pay television service will be dedicated "to the themes of sex appeal, sensuality, eroticism and sexuality".

Programming could also include documentaries, news coverage and magazine programs focussing on the industries associated with these themes and the personalities involved in these industries.

The Commission received two interventions opposing the application, from David Snow and from Eva Kovacic-Lee, both of whom contended that the applicant’s proposed adult programming offends their sensibilities and goes against their personal values.

The CRTC also noted that due to the adult nature of the programming, Vanessa may only be distributed at the specific request of the subscriber and that broadcast distributors are not permitted to package the service in such a way that subscribers are obligated to purchase it in order to purchase any other programming service, other than an adult programming service. Furthermore, distributors are required to take measures to fully block the reception of both the audio and video portions of the service to subscribers that request it not to be receivable in their home, in either unscrambled or scrambled form.

Well Mole, just for you, here are the only words that will be subtitled:

French Audio: Ah oui!! Encore! Arrete-Pas!
English Sub: Oh Yes! Again! Don't Stop!

Ah. Thanks for adding the text, Hugh. I'm a member on this Mothering.com parenting forum message boards and over there, we're only allowed to copy so many lines from another source w/out violating copyright rules. Since the layout of the forums' message boards are identical, I thought it would be the same here, so I only provided a link.

It'd be nice if this channel opperated like "Private" pay-per-view porn channel from France that's on Dish. I kind of like the badly-dubbed European porn style.

Encrypted digital signals, including "adult content" channels, are sent to nearly every house in the country all the time via a variety of satellites. Unless you subscribe or do some hacking you'd never know they were there. Why should cablecos be subjected to a different standard?

Default Vanessa Adult Channel Coming in March

Apparently this channel will be coming to Videotron in March both in English and French, SD and HD, according to Wiki at least. Can anyone confirm this?

Anne-Marie Losique takes TV to new heights with her new channel Vanessa

MONTREAL, April 20 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Radio-television
Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has granted Anne-Marie Losique both the
French and English rights for a new digital subscription television channel
dedicated entirely to adult lifestyle entertainment. Vanessa launches in March
2010, in both SD and HD in English and French.
Not to be confused with mainstream adult channels, Vanessa is a unique
concept for a television channel, with original programming created and
produced in Montreal. The U.S. and France have many channels dedicated to the
18 + market, but Quebec and Canada have yet to follow suit. With Vanessa,
adult audiences can finally enjoy quality programmes with Canada's answer to
the Playboy Channel.
"What I love about Quebec is our affinity for local talent, it's as
traditional as it is sexy. Vanessa will be a concept that is completely
developed here" proclaims Anne-Marie Losique.
Always ahead of the curve, Anne-Marie prepares to enter a new dimension
of television with a channel that will change the face of television in 2010.

The launch date seems to be more of a prediction, rather than a set in stone date. Their projection came off the heels of them just getting approval from the CRTC. Who knows, it may launch by March, but I'd say it's far from a guarantee.

One of the best home-grown (moan?) shows TÚlÚvision Quatre-Saisons had was "Sex Shop" which featured reports about the adult entertainment industry from around the world. Canadian made, highly entertaining, and surprisingly informative.

Hopefully the Vanessa channel will reach similar goals. It's truly fascinating to see how far human beings will go to satisfy their primal urges, made even more interesting by the specie's ability to create specialized tools for such activities.

Maybe I should get a job with them. There will definitely be a lot of research.

BTW, Anne-Marie Losique is the daughter of Serge Losique, the head of the Montreal World Film Festival. She has plenty of experience in the movie/television/music/theatre industry here in Quebec, so she's far from being a newcomer. You could say she's been in the entertainment business since birth.

Vanessa was approved in March 2009 and the press release posted above was released in April 2009, so take the launch date with a grain of salt.
