I "inherited" a bottle of this several years ago, bottled in 1979, and packaged in a wood box. Has anyone ever tasted this spirit? Is it any good? I don't want to break the seal to taste it in case it would make a nice gift to a rye fancier.

That's a bit long in the bottle for grain-based whiskey, so don't worry about whether to open it or not - go ahead and give it to someone. It'll be smoooooooooooth...

Its very smooth. It does not bite. Which can be dangerous because you can drink too much and feel fabulous but nearly die the morning after...... Whoever you give it to.... Please tell them to eat a big steak dinner with lots of sausage for dessert. Its definitely something you would want to give as a gift if you cannot share it with them personally (to make sure they do not kill themselves). Its a very nice whiskey. My fav.

I'll second the smooooth comments. My sister-in-law just got a bottle for my father-in-law as a retirement gift and we sampled it over Thanksgiving. Very nice. I'm not really into sipping ryes, but this one was very good.

If you're looking for a free unbiased opinion, you can ship it to me in Markham. I'll be happy to let you know how smooth it was. I don't charge for my services either.
