Default 9200 recording amounts screwy

In the past I recorded 1 hour HD shows and 1 hour of my 25 hours maximum was used. Now when I record a 1 hour HD show, about 45 minutes of my 25 hours maximum is used. Others here have noted this. My question is why is this happening?

From what I learned at this site, the 9200 simply records the incoming data stream at whatever bit rate that happens to be, no extra processing/compression. So the obvious answer, since BEV have not magically upgraded my PVR to MPEG4, is that the bit rate of the recorded channel is less than it was.

I was sufficiently pissed this morning (and had 40 minutes to waste), so I decided to call BEV. I skipped over the first level tech in record time. The next guy started by telling me that Bell is in the process of implementing an MPEG4 delivery stream … I stopped him on that one real quick. He swore that the signals that they direct to us, are the exact signals that they receive from the networks – is this true???. BEV do not and have not changed the bit rates, so the question was left unanswered – is this true??? He also indicated that I was the very first person to have ever registered a concern over this – go figure!

What’s going on?

It's supposed to be true according to CRTC regulations, but unfortunately for us BEv customers it isn't. They quite happily transcode channels from 1080i to 720p, and it's hard to imagine that they'd be able to keep the bitrates intact when they're cramming 3 or 4 HD channels on one transponder. If they had 8PSK + MPEG4 they might be able to do it, but with QPSK and MPEG2 there shouldn't be more than 2 HD channels per transponder.

Recording times are estimates. They can be more or less than actual, depending on the channel and content.

What else will all the disgruntled Evu subs blame on compression and when will all this technical talk slow down.....I am still impressed that a light bulb comes on when I turn on a switch.
