Not sure if this also applies in this thread however I experience sound drops by a noticable amount when I enter the guide or bring up any OSD items from my Pace TDC770D it however doesn't always come back up upon OSD exit, wondering if this is a common issue or not.

Hello people.I guess all the providers (bell, rogers, shaw dishnet, directv)are having audio drop outs.I've never heard of what the problem could be.But you're not alone my friends.A US site (dbstalk.com) has the same thread going on.

Default Weird sound problem on CityTV HD

Just about every time I watch "30 Rock", whether I'm on KING HD Seattle or CityTV HD Vancouver, the incidental background music overwhelms the the actors' voices making it very hard to hear what they say. As soon as the music stops, the audio returns to normal. Is anybody else experiencing this problem? BTW I'm just using the TV's audio and not my sound bar. I don't think it's a sim-subbing problem as KING wasn't carrying "30 Rock" tonight due to the earlier football game.
I've sent Shaw two emails about this and they claim that nobody else has brought it to their attention. They further suggested that the problem is not theirs and must be coming from the TV station. I asked them if that is so why don't they adjust the audio signal at their head-end and the fellow again repeated that they were not aware of any audio problems!

I have noticed the exact same problem MAXAM. It is most noticeable on 30 Rock because they use that incidental music to transition between scenes but I have become convinced that it is a CityTV HD problem. I am using 5.1 and the problem is that the centre channel is not loud enough. Unfortunately, I have a relatively new Denon receiver with Audyssey (or however you spell it) and it doesn't have individual adjustments for each of the tracks so I can't fix it at my place. I think it is about 6db low. Not enough to jump out ordinarily but in situations where there is a significant music track it makes the dialogue hard to hear. There was an episode of Parks & Recreation this past season that had a scene in a nightclub and I couldn't hear any of the dialogue at all. Had to use Closed Captions.

I would wonder if the problem you experienced on King Tv was in fact a simsub of City TV.

Edit: Oops, just saw your comment about King not being simsub. I guess that affects my theory.

Not really, it actually supports your theory. I'm also pretty sure the problem originates with CityTV. My question to Shaw was: Could they not tweak the audio coming from CityTV so the music wouldn't drown out the actors when they were speaking? All I received in the two emails was: They were not aware of any audio problems. Therefore, they cleverly sidestepped my question!

As I've mentioned in another section of this forum, CityTV is messed up with the sounds of US programs. They somehow downmix the original 5.1 sound to 2.0 and simulate 5.1 sound out of it, sometimes remixed back to the original 5.1 and in one worst situation (I believe it was an American Got Talent episode) the messed-up 5.1->2.0->5.1 sound was delayed and mixed into the original 5.1 sound so you hear echo and a totally messed up sound, and in most times the centre channel is way too loud. Some example US programs affected are American Got Talent, Bachelorette, Bachelor Pad. I've confirmed that the original sounds from Shaw's east coast feeds (no simsub) of those programs were fine. The messed-up sounds from City TV also occur with OTA.

Regarding my earlier mention on this thread about ABC or any 720p channel losing 5.1 sound and becoming 2.0 sound in the recordings at exactly 6:08am every day unless I stop and restart the recording, here's an update to the problem. The problem went away after ALL of my series recording schedules had been removed (by a system hang and subsequent spontaneous reboot). The problem hasn't come back even after I've recreated all my series recording schedules (more than 30 of them).

Default Global on my DCT sucks

I have a DCT700
& ever since Ive had it Global likes to drop audio & takes about 5min or so to even turn the channel cause of it.
Its really bad at turning the channels if say I go out for a couple of hours leaving it on an American cbs station cause Im recording something and find out that it was/is on global as well.
I usually dont care cause 98% of the time the American station shows the show at an earlier time..

Its not just Global, Sometimes its other stations as well, like Bravo.

is the thing just defective or is it a problem for others?
please and thank you =)

Default Survivor sound disappeared?

I recorded Survivor last night on the Seattle CBS channel but of course it was sim subbed by Global. About 6 minutes into the show, the sound completely disappeared. Did anybody else have this problem or is it a mechanical problem with my Pace PVR? I've sinced amended the recording schedule to include the Detroit station as well in case this is a typical sim subbing issue.

I don't think it's related to the KIRO-DT (CBS seattle) station problem I had on Tues and Weds because the problem I had was NOT affected by simsubbed program. However, who knows if Shaw was trying to fix the problem (I reported it to Shaw on Weds afternoon). I was going to post a heads-up on the other thread for those potential Survivor/BigBrother fans but I didn't think simsubbed program would be affected.

It's not hindsight but I wonder why you record KIRO-DT for any Global-simsubbed show. Global has the highest bitrate of all local OTA stations and Shaw's HD channels. Even though simsubbed, KIRO-DT still runs its normal lower bitrate on Shaw with any Global-simsubbed programs.

Default Audio Glitching on Analog Cable

I have noticed that for the past few days there is some serious audio glitching occurring on certain channels. It is most audible on BBC World and CNN (channels 36 and 33 in the lower mainland). This seems to only affect the analog versions of those channels. Anyone else hear it?

Are you sure you are receiving those channels in analogue?

Actually, my thinking was that the Detroit station often gets preempted by any (all?) long running NFL games that were held on Thursday nights. I forgot that Survivor was moved to Wednesday night. I do have that issue with the Amazing Race though on Sunday nights as CBS will always air 60 Minutes in full after a long game, and Amazing Race ends up either truncated or missed entirely. I usually record everything from the eastern Time Zones to avoid the sim-subbing. Thanks for the heads-up on the Seattle channel though.

Recorded and watched "The Colony" Thursday evening on Discovery...nearly unwatchable due to major audio drops. I haven't heard it this bad in a very long time.
