Checked out the local Rogers in Orleans (east Ottawa) on Thursday night to see if they were carrying the new HD formats. They were and the price was the same as for regular DVD but with a $1.00 premium (if kept for more than a day).
Decided to go over to my Blockbuster instead which has been renting the HD formats since last winter and noticed that they also instituted a $1.00 premium (but not as a late fee) over the regular rental cost. Apparently this went into effect on 31 October for all HD discs. Anyone else notice this....

Isn't it 5.39 + taxes or so at Rogers? Isn't that the same as new release DVD's? I'm not sure as I have never rented DVD's there before.
I know that Blockbuster did up their price (and they still get almost zero new titles) so I have basically given up on them. I signed up for their rewards program in the summer so I'm a bit bummed at that but I guess I got my money back for it already in the coupons/free movies. |

Again, you guys are a really tough room. Three weeks ago, no rentals. Now, some rentals. Now too expensive or not enough. Hidef is really, really young as far as this market goes and players in homes. Give it a chance. In the meantime, rent the stuff you are interested, and don't bother with the rest. This market will take some time to grow, let alone mature.
The present day alternative is buying discs at retail, watching them once, then selling them on e-bay. I think the rental story is at least a little better than that. |

I wouldn't mind it as much at Blockbuster if they didn't already have the lower price for many months. Like I said before I have given up on them due to not getting new titles. zip.ca, Rogers, and buying are my sources now.

That's what I like about zip.ca, same price for everything and at 25 bucks a month I go through about 6 to 8 HDDVD movies per month along with old tv shows on DVD not available for sale or rent at any other rental outlet.

For people in downtown Toronto, head to Queen Video for Blu Ray. Lots of titles (40+) and they are 3.75 for a one week rental. I went to blockbuster (dupont and christie) on Friday and grabbed a couple of HDDVDs and was dissapointed to pay $14+ after tax. However, the new releases coming on HDDVD will keep me going back. Hopefully Queen starts to stock some new HDDVDs cause they currently only have 6 or 7 to rent.
