Decent numbers for the title, if they are true. The real test with BD is the ability to sustain decent numbers after the release date. In general, BD seems to be able to do that much better than HD DVD so I think it's safe to assume S3 will best Transformers. |

Interesting, I saw no mention of the box-set. Do the first-week numbers include the full trilogy box set or not? From what I remember on the Amazon.com rankings, the trilogy was doing better than the single movie.

From what I have read today those numbers do not include the set. I know Amazon likely sold more sets but I bet more individual SM3 copies were sold at the bigger sellers like Best Buy. I have read people saying it is just under 200,000 if you include the set sales. Hopefully some independent group will put out an estimate like was done for the TF sales.

It's hard to measure actual sales of this title because of the boxset. It seems most folks liked Spiddy 1&2 but hated 3. Since the first two where only in the boxset, people picked it up. I did.

I personally don't think the box set should count, because like james mentioned, most people hated the 3rd, but loved the first two, so you really have no choice but to get the box set.

There are also a lot of people that looked at the set being a better deal. The set should only count as 1 of course (since there is only one SM3 movie in there) but it should count as a sale of SM3.
Irregardless the movie sold very well (likely the 2nd best selling hi-def title of all-time so far) but maybe a little short of what many people thought it would. It will be interesting to see if any of the other exclusive Blu-ray titles this year will be able to outsell it (I think at least one of them will) and also if Harry Potter SKU's can outsell it (quite likely I think). |

I think a lot of people were expecting too much from Spiderman 3. I share this sentiment from the article in the op:

I expect it's a combined figure for the title -- single + boxed set. And, yes, good numbers and lots more stock in the channel to sell through Xmas. Hidef needs more of these titles to get people using it and excited about the great PQ and movie experience. Bravo, Spidey!

I hated Revolutions as well, but I got all three nevertheless. I just didn't bother waiting for a two-disc collector's edition of the third one. |

I think Harry Potter will sell better than Spiddy 3. The boxset contains 5 movies so It might be outside of some budgets but from a dollar point of view, I'm sure it will generate more $$.
From a single release point of view, I expect Potter 5 (whatever the official name is) will slaughter Spiddy 3. The main reason for this is the dual format support from WB. If "300" can generate big numbers then Potter should slaughter "300". |

There are at least twice as many HD DVD players in homes with the release of Harry Potter over the time 300 was released. And the release date is timed to maximize gift giving Xmas sales.
I suspect Harry Potter will be one of the poster children for CES 2008. |

So will HD DVD catch up in terms of sales ratio for Harry? If they don't, then HD DVD is in serious trouble.

There are a lot more Blu-ray players as well. I think the 40GB PS3 is going to do very well for the xmas season and there have been a good number of all types of players sold since July.
The ratios on Harry Potter will be very interesting (assuming that Warner can figure out how to make enough copies for both formats and get them distributed properly). |

I was really only trying to say Harry Potter will likely do well for hidef in general and is likely to touted at CES 2008 showing hidef media has arrived. I think it's likely to do better in HD DVD because it isn't testosterone driven film like 300.
