I live just off the coast of southwestern NB and look at the American shore from my living room...
Aliant has high speed internet 5 kms from my doorstep and no plans to bring it closer. There is an American company (Pioneer Wireless) that has a point of presence (tower... whatever) within 3 miles of my house and darn near in line of sight (only a few trees in the way). A Canadian company (Aernet Wireless) has permission to sell access through that tower, BUT they have no installation technicians in my area. So... I'd have to pay $50 per hour for them to drive here, plus whatever it costs for installation, then $50 per hour for them to drive back... round trip for them 5 to 6 hours (a free ferry ride is involved). Also, if I needed a service call for any reason, I'd have to pay the $50 per hour rate AGAIN. I don't think I should be penalised in this way, but... I don't have many options... Satellite would cost about as much, and there is an installer nearby. But, the cost per month is higher, there is the issue of signal latency, AND I read almost nothing good about this company (or any satellite internet provider, for that matter). I've talked to Aliant many, many, many times... I've written my local MLA... I am sick and tired of waiting for high speed... I'm not sure I have a question... I just felt the need to vent... There have been a few attempts to organize people who want high speed internet that live in this area, but nothing that has accomplished anything. Does anyone have any similar experiences or know of people who have organised and actually GOT high speed as a result? Thanks for the forum and I look forward to reading up on home theater systems! |
