SD Video issue on my 505 - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

A while back I had issues when watching an HD program with the video dropping out. That issue has since been fixed but now the same thing is happening when watching SD programs.

When it happens it goes a few times every minute on pretty much any SD channel (haven't tried them all, yet). When I press the guide button it doesn't do it to either the guide or the video in the guide.

Doesn't seem very consistently either as sometimes it doesn't occur at all. But when it does, it is very frequent to the point it makes the program unwatchable.

No problems with the audio, however.

I have the 505 outputting 1080 with 480 override to get around the colored bars on the right in HD. I have checked the connection of my DVI cable with the HDMI into the TV and all is good.

Just as an experiment, have you tried using the component cables that came with the 505?

No I haven't tried different cables. I figured because the video is fine while the guide is up or watching the HD channels the cables shouldn't be the issue.

However, I will not rule anything out at this point.

Also, if you have more than one receiver, try swapping receivers or coax feeds. Even try disconnecting the power source and coax for 4-5 minutes, then reconnecting coax first, then power.

I only have one receiver hooked up but I will try your suggestion tonight and see how that goes.

One thing I just thought of. We are actually sharing a dish with our neighbours. We are connected directly to the dish, not split from our neighbours feed. Not sure if this has any bearing on the issue, but offering all the info I have.

Well, I tried unplugging the receiver and coax for 10 or so mintues. I reconnected the coax (dish) first and then powered the receiver up. I tried an SD channel and almost immediately the picture blanked out again and then 5 or 6 more times over the next minute.

Any other suggestions?

So, the problem seems to be with my video settings.

When the new firmware was released I started getting the colored bars on the right of the screen when I selected an HD program from the guide. One fix to that was to change the aspect ration on the receiver (via the red button on front) from Auto (0000) to 1080 and then change the video override to 480p.

I put everything back to auto and left the override and no there is no loss of picture on the SD channels

The aspect ratio is controlled by the button on the newer remotes. The red button on the front panel of the box is to change the native resolution of the picture. Before the new EO, it was suggested that the red button be left at 0000 to allow the display to work at its native resolution. Now, it is suggested that the red button resolution setting match the native display of the TV, earlier models being 1080i and later models at 720p. That may not be appropriate in all cases, however, so experimenting for the best setting is in order.

Understood, but I watched TV for a couple hours last night with the setting at 0000 and not once did my SD picture cut out. It seems whenever I have the native resolution set to anything other than 0000 my SD picture cuts out to the point I can not watch any SD channel.
