Is it just me, or does anyone else think Rogers may be doing this to pressure Apple?

It's well known that Apple is insisting that wireless carriers accepts its terms if they want the iPhone (unlimited data download, monthly revenue sharing). Also that the official response from Rogers regarding the iPhone is that no agreement has been reached with Apple regarding availability of the iPhone in Canada.

Could it be, by making a splashy launch (lots of media bought apparently) of two Windows mobile devices in the lead-up to the gift-giving season, that Rogers is firing a "we don't need iPhone - we have lots of other attractive product" salvo? Is it a reasonable strategy to pressure Apple into agreeing to terms more favourable to Rogers?

Maybe it's just my paranoia. Maybe Apple is busy enough meeting the demand in the USA and preparing for the launch in Germany and the UK (glitches have arisen with the France launch, although they may be resolved by the early Nov target date). Maybe Apple doesn't consider the Canadian market big enough to be a priority and is content to wait for Rogers (or someone else) to meet its terms. Then again, i am the guy who expects Telus to announce it's beginning to convert to GSM.

rogers may finally bend to allow unlimited data, but i really dont think they will let the monthly revenue sharing go through.. and since no other gsm carrier is around theyre probably not too worried themselves

your prob right about apple being busier with other things like the demand in the US, and launching in different countries in europe, where there are much greater populations compared to canada

1)Telus will not be going to gsm any time soon.It would cost millions and millions of daollars for them to do this. They would have to replace all of the towers and give all of there customers new phones. This would aslo take about a year to do.

2)I have been talking to a apple insider and its not apple its rogers that the delay.Rogers want to make the iphone to much with rogers only features and thats the hold up.

3)The big rumor is holt renfrew will be selling the iphone for $700 start mid oct.

The differences are minimal between 5 and 6. What device do you have? Rogers may have an upgrade available.

The Financial Post and The Globe and Mail both carried reports from financial market analysts earlier this years quoting Telus' chief financial officer as putting the cost at $350, to be spread over 2-3 years, and describing the conversion as virtually inevitable over the long-term. It's not so much a matter of "if" Telus will switch, but "when". Obviously, it would be necessary to provide both CDMA and GSM for a period while users convert. I still expect Telus will offer GSM coverage at least in the lower mainland of BC well before the 2010 Olympics.

I have no idea why Holt-Renfrew would get in to selling mobile phones but anything is possible. One Toronto retailer, whose name I forget, was offering a hacked iPhone as a premium for big-spending customers in September but I don't know what it would do on Rogers' network other than work as a phone with a nice contact list and look good.
