Default Target is carrying the Venturer SHD7000 HD player - US$249

I don't know if I can post store links here, so I won't, but the Venturer SHD7000 is now officially listed at Target's online store for $249.99.

I wonder what Wal-Mart will be selling.

BTW, while the price is good, I can't help but be a little bit disappointed. I was hoping for a $199.99 starting point, with prices going lower from time to time on sale.

I am also curious to see a Canadian retailer carry this. I have heard previous price points of about $199 MSRP.

Funny how Target, with their agreement to carry only Blu-ray stand-alone players in their stores, is one of the first retailers to have the Venturer on-line!

What the Target presence does -- even though it is online sales only and its at the $249 price point -- is legitimize Venturer. Target is the 2nd largest retailer in the US (I believe); if they are willing to sell Venturer and put them on their website -- that's all good for Venturer (and HD DVD).

Until now, Venturer was a press release. Now, a reality.

True but on the same site the Toshiba was $50 with free HD DVD offers.

It's a start for this company but price is too high.

I should clarify.

When I said "it's all good for Venturer" I did not mean the potential online only sales Target might provide at $249. But what it does do is make it WAY easier for Venturer to talk to other large retailers and say: "See? Target carries us -- now you should too". And collectively in those B&M stores, Venturer can make a killing provided its business model supports the US $149 street price which was floated with some credibility a two or three weeks ago.

All of that, if executed properly (and that is wholly dependent on Venturer's management team), a very significant number of non-Toshiba HD DVD players could be added to the market ... every one of them intent on buying Shrek 3, Harry Potter and many other titles.

This is HUGE for HD-DVD as these players should regularly sell at $149-$179 USD. What they sell for here in Canada is anyone's guess. Blu-Ray needs to counter this at some point. I have a 720p 50" set and I am getting darned tempted by HD-DVD at the price point of the A-2 as it stands right now.

Blu-Ray is really pricing themselves out of the market. I wonder how many of those Venturer players find their way under may Christmas trees?

With a couple of major studios abandoning Bluray recently it may have been enough to sway them to carry HDDVD again, hopefully Blockbuster follows suite if they want to keep Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks et al movies available.

Right now the price is $250. When some one actually lists it for your fantasy $149-$179 get back to us. In the mean time this is small.

Fantasy? With A-2s selling in the $299 range in the U.S. and having movies bundled with them you had better believe that $199 will be the top street price for the Venturer. With X-mas and Boxing Day sales I believe that $149-$179 will be an easy price to find for the unit. I am quoting USD prices mind you. In Canada I can see the Venturer selling for $200-$275...

Late December/Early January will tell whether I was way off base or not. Blu-Ray needs to come out with some players in this ball park. There are lots of folks out there like me that have had an HD set for the past year or so and are starting to get curious about HDM. A sub $300 price point is comfy for me. Blu-Ray is nowhere close to this price point right now. Of course this is still early days in this "war". The next 6-18 months should be interesting.

I still believe that a sub $250 (and it will be sub $200 in the U.S.) HD-DVD player is HUGE when a Blu-Ray player will cost 2-3 times that amount.

Huh? According to the original post, they are listed on the target website for $249.99...

$249 is quite likely the MSRP, which nobody actually sells at. My guess is that the final dealer cost price has yet to be determined, so Target cannot yet set their regular selling price, leaving MSRP as a safe number to use.

$249 is what is listed on the website. My take is that once the unit is in B&M locations the price will be lowered to $199 to get it under $200 and that way they can say that the unit is on "sale".

I cold find nowhere on the Targer website where $249 was listed as the MSRP. According to some on the AVS forum who have connections at Venturer the MSRP was supposed to be $199.

Again, time will prove me right or wrong. My take is that Target (and others) will be aggresive with the pricing on these things and get the price down under $200.

I can tell you based on distributor cost (I just checked it) this player will not drop to $199. Target would need to sell below cost. There is very little margin on these.

I would pay the premium for the Toshiba.
