Default All digital Kelowna in 2011?

I called Shaw today to see if they had any thoughts on how I can improve my analog picture quality on my 6200. They said that I could take it back and buy another 6412. I told them that I did not need 3 PVR's in my house...I just want HD on my basement TV that I hardly watch. I then asked about when we would go all digital as that would solve my problem and got a great answer....

A tech (not a csr) told me today that Kelowna will not be going all digital until 2011. 9 Months ago they said sometime in May 07. What is going on with this company? Sometimes I think that the majority of people that work for Shaw do not even own a TV!!! Anybody know of an actual ETA for all digital in my area?

He may have gotten the all digital "map" confused with the digital switch-over date. All stations must have a digital broadcast by 2011 in Canada and 2009 in the US.

Normally info like this is not rolled out to frontline staff. The only ones in the know would work in the headend and even then they are usually only told a few months in advance. Odds are you won't have any luck finding out until it's almost time to launch it.

That only applies to OTA BROADCASTS and has absolutely nothing to do with cable.

In fact in the United States the FCC just recently put in a ruling that US Cable companies must carry a tier of analog cable (or convert a digital signal to analog) until Feb. 2012 and this will most likely be expanded.

Here in Canada the CRTC requirement allows a cable co to apply for turning off analog at 85% digital customer base (whether it is approved is any body's guess) and I’m not sure what the 85% digital customer base means. I have two of four of my outlets on digital DCTs, am I a digital customer?? I consider to be an analog customer as my 4 analog outlets are MORE IMPORTANT TO ME then my two aging digital DCTS.

I predict that some form of analog service will remain here on Shaw for many years to come. If not, I’ll switch to one of the cheaper all digital providers.eg, BELL, TELLUS, etc… BTW, the major cable providers down south have just launched a new ad campaign stating that their analog customers need not to worry cause they will offer analog cable way past the analog OTA deadline = that’s a major ad campaign that recently started running in the states on cable… I wouldn’t be surprised to see those kind of ads starting to appear on Shaw, instead of those annoying & very loud snail commercials running currently.

As i can see it..cable companies can either require everyone to buy a box and shut off analogue..or allow digital feeds without a box (Built in QAM tuners in newer Tv's). Both seem to be no win situation as you need to buy a box or get a new TV with a QAM tuner.

Sorta reminds of the days when we needed to buy that cable TV converter box thing to get TV.

Shaw has a competitive advantage with analog tv - you dont need equipment to watch tv.

With the additions of some specialty channels to the analog channels, I would think that is an indication that analog will be here for some time to come.

In regards to all digital in Kelowna... it will arrive without much advanced notice. You wont get an accurate answer from a csr or a tsr - only the big boys in Calgary know the answer to that
