I understand that the USB port is "reserved for future use", but can it still provide power? I would like to plug in a USB powered fan if it will work, or else I may start using the 9200 as a secondary barbecue grill!

Thanks for the quick response. Do you just leave it switched on, so it runs whenever the receiver is turned on? When you say "cheap", are we talking $17 at Tiger Direct type of cheap?
Any thoughts on using a fan in the whole A/V stand to cool off everything at once (tuner, dvd, etc.?) Thanks again for the quick response. |

Just as an FYI, Lapcool and other devices were discussed in the following thread.

I can't comment on using a fan to cool your 9200 but I suppose anything would help.
I bought a cheap laptop cooler locally for $28 and it works great. Shop around because the cheapest price I saw at one large big-box store was $65. I typically plug it in whenever I start to watch tv for the day and then unplug it before I go to bed. |

I leave my LapCool2 operating 24/7 on low. It dramatically reduced my HD temperatures and is barely audible.
Make sure you get the Lapcool3 LPC-301 and not lapcool3. Lapcool3 sucks the air from below the case instead of blowing air onto the case. |

Strange. I got 2 Lapcool 2s and the 9200 drive temps went up. On medium they stayed the same. Go figure.
The space they are in is a little confined. The noisy 9200 fan no longer starts up though. |

I can't recall the type or model of cooler I bought but I think it was the LPC-301 model ($28 locally in Ottawa). Like Orion, my 9200 temp decreased dramatically. The entire unit feels cool to the touch now.

I used two pc cooling fans, mounted them to the back of my av stand (one for each side). i bought a 12 volt power supply to power them, bought an rf on off plug in so i can turn fans on or off .
my major reason for this was my xbox 360 and av reciever, it keeps my whole system cooled down. works really well. Hearing that the usb on pvr gives power, i might switch them to be powered from that (only if power goes off with pvr power), then i wont need the extra power remote for fans. |

I have something similar. A generic 9V DC power block works well. (Just make sure it provides enough power for the fans.) I plug it into the back of my A/V receiver so the fans come on with that.

I am worried about the lifespan of my 9242 since it runs fairly hot. I also don't like how loud the internal fan is. I suspect the internal fan may spin down a little if the 9242 was being cooled with the assistance of an external cooler.
Is anyone out there using a laptop cooler for their 9242? Also does anyone know if having an external hard drive plugged into one USB and having a laptop cooler plugged into the other USB will work? |

There are many existing posts on ways to cool the receiver including numerous people that use laptop coolers. It sounds though as perhaps yours runs hotter than most. You can see some temperature values in the data in the menu. The fan should slow when not required.
Running more than one device off the USB ports should not be a problem. |

anyone have good experience with silent laptop coolers for the 9242? The zalman sounds good, bit I don't think my 9242 would like the angle:
