I thought you cannot burn in the new plasmas or LCDS unless you leave a static image on the TV for 72 hours or something like that.

I recently had a dvd just playing music with the playlist displaying on my Panny 50" plasma for about 4 hours, it took several hours of regular viewing to get rid of the Phillips logo in the corner of the screen after the fact, so I guess burn in would still be an issue.

What you just described is Image Retention, since it went away.
Burn-in is permanent damage. |

LCD TVs, and LCD monitors, are not susceptible to burn-in. That is one of the inherent advantages of LCDs, again just the nature of the technology. |

Ok I am a newbie here
I am looking for a new Tv I am think I like a plasma more then LCD but have noticed that the Lcd's in my price range have 1080p where as the plasmas have only 720p now my understanding is that plasmas have darker blacks and can plat high speeds better Last edited by 57; 2009-01-07 at 11:39 PM. Yes of course my mistake, so this would not be a concern? Image rentention after 3-4 hours? I just want to make sure this type of use will not result in burn in later.

As stated previously many times it takes a lot of static viewing hours to get burn-in on a plasma. If you leave CNN or the Weather Network on for 2 or 3 days straight you will start seeing some burn-in. Or if you ONLY watch SD programing with black bars. This is the same with CRT's. If you have never had any of your old CRT's get burn-in you will not likely get burn-in on your plasma.
I am a heavy XBOX 360 gamer. Some days I have played a game 6-8 hours straight on my Panny plasma. My plasma is over 1 1/2 years old. No burn-in what so ever. As long as you vary your viewing there is no problem. When I first bought the plasma I was too careful worrying about it. Now it doesn't even enter my mind. Also, and I maybe wrong about this but it seems to be the case with my TV, is that I find image retention gets less and less as my Plasma gets older. It seems when I first got it there was alot more image retention. Now if I get some image retention it goes away within minutes of watching something else. In fact I have never heard of anybody getting burn-in on plasmas and I have alot of friends and family that have them. The only time I have heard with plasmas getting burn-in are the idiots that decided to use plasma as info displays such as in airports or information centres where the screen rarely changes if at all. Burn-in should no longer be a reason not to pick plasma over LCD. Repeat after me... My plasma will not burn-in unless I'm an idiot My plasma will not burn-in unless I'm an idiot My plasma will not burn-in unless I'm an idiot |

It is no wonder there is so much confusion in regard to this subject. Below is a quote taken from a new series 4 Samsung LCD manual.
"Precaution when displaying a still image" "A still image may cause permanent damage to the tv screen. Do not display a still image on the LCD panel for more than 2 hours as it can cause screen image retention. This image retention is also known as screen burn. To avoid such image retention reduce the degree of brightness and contrast when displaying a still image. Damage caused by the effect are not covered by the warranty" At first I thought this was a standard comment placed on all thier TV's as Samsung also makes Plasma's. The beginning of this qoute however specifically refers to an LCD display. Although it is widely accepted that LCD is not as prone as plasma, this quote would sugest that LCD displays are not completely imune iether.

LCDs have been used for computer monitors for years. No burn in or image retention occurs there even after months or years of the same image.

True. The only way you could "bun-in" an LCD is with a very high power lamp that somehow damaged the LCD panel with heat.
That is not how LCD flat panels are made, so it's impossible. |

I agree completely. The point of my post was to illustrate one of the reasons there seems to be so much uncertainty regarding burn in.
When one of the the major players in the LCD market (Samsung) states very clearly on the inside cover of the manual (2 week old TV) that a static image may cause permanent damage to the display. It seems reasonable to question popular opinion regarding LCD displays.

At work we have an 17" iMac LCD which is left on 24/7. It serves as an email server so the screen is always on. Anyways, the screen does not change and the apple logo, info bars and dock have at least caused some image retention. The iMac is about 3 years old.
If it is impossible to cause burn-in on an LCD then it is at least possible to cause image retention. |
