I'm hoping someone with a PS3 can help me figure this out. Does the PS3 accept any HDMI cable or does Sony make their own cable like Microsoft?
Also, my TV only accepts DVI connections, can an expert tell me if this cable will allow me to connect a PS3 to my DVI tv? Any info is very much appreciated. Last edited by hugh; 2007-08-20 at 12:33 PM. Reason: url removed. No retial links please. Use manufacturer links |

Yes, the PS3 uses a standard HDMI connection for a standard HDMI cable, and yes a HDMI-DVI cable will work fine (for video only, you'll need separate audio connections).

I don't see what was the big deal with Sony not including the HDMI cable, since you can get one so cheap. Anyways, thanks again. |

I've also ready somewhere that if you use the hdmi connection on the ps3 that you have to use the digital optical audio for sound. Is that correct?

I'm actually pretty pleased with the way Sony has embraced "standards" with the PS3...Bluetooth, USB, all major card formats (except their own from PS2...figure that one out?!), HDMI and TOSlink audio. And don't forget Linux OS and Blu-Ray
It's refreshing not to get hosed by console makers extorting extra costs from its customers by requiring proprietary accessories. Now, as for Sony including the HDMI cable, they probably wanted to leave their retailers an upsell opportunity (gross profit margin is obscenely high on HDMI cables). It wouldn't be a bad idea, though. I suspect the PS3 is the center of a home theatre system more than any other console in history, so it's not hard to imagine that they get hooked up to HDTVs and AV receivers more often than a Wii or X360. |

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised I didn't have to buy "special" HDMI and optical audio cables. I haven't even opened the cables that came with my PS3.
They should have included a set of HMDI/Toslink but you can buy a quality HDMI cable for $4 US and an optical audio cable for $4 US from monoprice.com or similar sites. |

They should have included an HDMI cable with the PS3, it's strange cause the 360 Elite does. Actually, did the PS3 even come with component cables? I never checked with mine since I already had an HDMI cable from monoprice for use with the PS3.

Nope - no component cables either. Yeah I've heard the new xbox has an HDMI but of course it is very new and I think they may have heard the complaints over Sony not including one with the PS3. I think if Sony were to do it again they would include it and may even start including it in a future iteration of the hardware.

If you have a new HDtv and you're just pumping the sound through the tv speakers then you can get sound over HDMI. If you have an older home theatre you'll probably need a the optical cable especially if you want 5.1 sound. If you're lucky enough to have a nice new receiver with HDMI switching, you should only need the 1 cable. |

I think the whole reason why Sony never included any HD cables at all was simply because most people don't have HD setups. Why put in all these different cables when barely anyone can use them? Makes far more sense to put in a cable that everyone regardless of setup can use.
In time HD will be the norm sure but for now it just doesn't make sense to include anything other then a standard RCA cable regardless of how cheap it might be to put in an HDMI cable or anything else). |

I'm sure it was a cost issue also since the company is losing money on each unit (or at least they were in the beginning). Each extra cable meant a greater loss!

But look at MS, they put in Component and Composite with the 360 Premium, so clearly it's not the complex to do, it was simply Sony being cheap.

MS loses money on every unit, too, so that's not the differentiator. I think Skyfire was closest to the truth. It's ironic, though, since a PS3 is more likely to find itself in a home theatre than is an Xbox.

Especially wasteful if its a cable that goes unused--how many people with a TV that supports HDMI would use component cables if they were included?
