Default Received new hardware - switch?

Hi,

I was talking to SC earlier in the week - switching some channels around - mentioned I had been talking to the other guys - and was offered an hardware refresh as I've been a subscriber from '98.

Today I the courier dropped off DSR317 and 207 receivers.

I currently have a DSR401 and at my cottage I have one of the original SC receivers (no idea what the model number is, it's the same full width as my DSR401, but it's the black case instead of grey).

So before I pull these out of the boxes and make arrangements to connect them up - including having an installer switch me over from a round dish to an eliptical - does anyone have any comments on this upgrade?

Should I switch?

Is newer in this case better?

I'll take it you mean '98 (sorry to be picky). Go ahead, and upgrade. The 317 is an box, plus you'll be able to take advantage of the new faster guide with instant on and the extended look ahead, search functions, ITV and extra program info in the near future.

Did you get them for free?

I also have some older 401's still in use.

Yes, free.

That's probably why I'm questioning it - sometimes free has a price...

On the otherhand, it might have just been a goodwill gesture for a longtime customer.

I've had a 317 for 3 months now. I've had to reset it twice, once was after a power failure. The new IPG is a huge improvement. It's excellent.

So the high speed guide reload works as advertised?

Well actually, the 207/317 do not have instant on as of yet. It will have it by the end of the month once E0 downloads to them. But a couple of others have said that it does work.

Never heard of this - being offered new receivers for free when others are still working. Did they ask for return of the old receivers?

Yes, there's a prepaid return sticker in each box.

Okay, swapped out the dsr421 in my cottage for a 207.

The 207 only has one set of RCA composite outputs instead of two, which is a bit of a bummer.

It seems faster, the new guide looks interesting. Too bad it doesn't do things like show upcoming episode times for future showings, or allow for searching the guide for a show by keyword.

But neither did your 421!
You can always grab some RCA "Y" splitters at the dollar store.
I believe a lot of what you are asking is forecast in near future code versions.

My 421 has two sets of RCA Composite video + stereo audio plugs - makes for an easy connection to TV + vcr / computer pvr.

The 400 series was always the Home Theatre line as compared to the 300 series bedroom receivers.

Now the new line shifts everything down a notch, the 317 is the replacement Home Theatre unit and the 207 becomes the bedroom unit.
