I have a Yamaha RX-V661BL. When I turn it up, it shuts down, and it's not really loud. I returned it, and the replacement does the same thing. What's the cause.
My speakers are Klipch Synergy F3 front Klipch Synergy C-3 center Klipch Synergy B-2 rare Klipch Sub-10 |

bad speaker connection or over heating.
make sure you dont have any loose speaker wires hitting the back of the receiver (Why they dont surround the terminals with plastic is beyond me!) |

As kgeorge78 says, you probably have a short on your speaker wires. Since you've replaced the receiver, I'd suspect it's at one of the speakers - either a wire touching another wire, or a problem with one of the speakers. Try disconnecting all the speakers and adding them in one at a time until the problem surfaces, or simply check all the wires at the speakers to ensure you don't have wires touching, etc.
Things to check first.

It goes without saying but in the troubleshooting section of your manual it should discuss what causes the receiver to shut down.

Dont feel bad, I've had 4 receivers in the past year and I've had this problem with every one - My guage is very thick so I get loose strands all over. I finally broke down and got banana plugs.

I double checked all of the wiring, I do use banana plugs on all connections. And I did read the troubleshooting in the manual, but it didn't help.
Could it be a defective speaker? They all sound ok except for my left rear has a lower volume. |

Do you have anything sitting on top of the receiver ??
There should be nothing on top as most receivers have vented slots on the top to let the heat vent outward. If you have anything sitting on top remove it. If you have balanced the volume and your left rear volume is still low remove the speaker wire at the receiver for the rear left and then try it again. Good luck.

Swap the speakers and see if the problem moves with the speaker or stay with the receiver.

Thanks for the feedback. It's great to get confirmation of the issue.

I had this the other day. I am setting up a 102 inch front projection home theatre. I laid all my cables out on the floor (connected) and ran a test (HD Serenity). Everything was great. then we ran the cables up on the ceiling and fitted crown molding to cover the wires.
Rechecked system, ran for 15 seconds or so and my receiver (Onkyo 604) shuts off ![]() Take deep breath, try again, same thing. Go into panic mode imagining a damaged wire somewhere and having to rip the crown molding down ( yes I have run a spare set) rush around and find my father in law had by mistake pulled a banana plug out of one of my surrounds and it was touching the other banana plug. Shove it back in, turn the volume UP and all is well; Resumed huge grins |
