Hello,
I have two computers running 24/24 (my desktop computer and my mythtv box). In winter, no problem, but in summer, it's too hot without air-conditioning... For some reasons, I don't want to shutdown my desktop computer. I would like to shutdown my MythTV box between 7 AM to 5 PM when there is no records and I don't watch TV. My idea is the following : Quote:
I think my setup would work, but not very simple. Do you know a better method ? Thanks. |

There is a second option, if your motherboard supports nvram-wakeup. I have an Epia ME6000, which does support this.
Check out this howto: http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Shutdown_Wakeup Regards, Jacob http://mythtvnews.com |

ohmer the computer should not really shut down in the summer if you have proper cooling. This tells me your cpu is over heating and shutting down as a safety measure.
First if you do not have any additional chasis fans to suck the hot ait out I recommend that you buy and install one. If you already do and have access to a small air compressor take the cpu outside and open the side covers and blow out all the dust. If not use your house vac. Make sure the cpu has no power while you are doing this. You will be amazed how much dust builds up inside. I have a small air compressor from Canadian tire and always use it to clean out my personal computers and customers cpu. Always the cpu fan and heat sink gets clogged up. Blowing out the power supply fan there tons of dust inside also the motherboard the chipset and ram. You will be amazed how much can build up in 90days. My computer is on a hard wood floor raised 6" and still dust builds up inside. Good luck.

Yaamon: no, my computer doesn't shutdown itself. I just want to shutdown it when I don't use it because my fan make too noise in summer to expluse the warm of the case and because it warms my appartment.
kobski: will check this. thanks. |

opps sorry I misread your original post.
Sometimes you can set in the motherboard bios that after a power down and when power is back on you can set the computer to boot up. This is what I do to my home server. So if my ups battery runs dry and shuts off when the power comes back on the server will turn it self on. Maybe you can buy one of those electronic timer and plug your cpu into it, if your bios has auto boot up ? What fans are you using that's noisy. I know when I had the volcano fans damm it was a constant roar. I replaced them all and all my computers are pretty quiet now.
