Just wondering if there is a way to archive shows I've recorded to an external hard disk or any other medium for that matter.

You could easily hook up a DVD recorder to the S-video or composite video output. See:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=17709 You would be recording a 480i signal and not HD, obviously. I don't believe that firewire is available/active on *C, so you can't transfer the HD files. Recording HD
