Default Sony Pulls the Plug on 20GB PlayStation 3

The least expensive way to currently buy into the Blu-ray format is soon to say Sayonara, with Sony announcing plans to discontinue production of the 20GB PlayStation 3 to focus on selling its higher-capacity 60GB cousin.

Apparently this model will still be sold in Japan.

They launch at a really high price in Europe, they up the MSRP in Canada, and they get rid of the cheaper 20GB model in North America ... anyone else think they have weird marketing techniques???

Yep I sure do. Is Sony fighting a losing battle in the console market? It seems that they have been plagued with problem after problem even before the launch last year as it was already a year late getting in the North American market. But even afterwards it just seems that there are still other problems too. Getting rid of the option that could have saved their bacon seems like the wrong thing to do. Oh well I am sure that M$ had their share of problems before and after the launch of their 360. I have a 360 and I have not had any problems with it as of yet. I just wish that more of their software from the first xbox was backwards comp.

I have the 20GB version. It was the only one available when I got it and for me, the extra $100 or so for more storage, Wifi and memory card slots wasn't worth it because I'm only using it as a Blu-ray player.

Sony said that the 60GB was outselling the 20GB by something like 10 to one (and apparently they were losing more on the 20GB one than the 60GB one) so it makes sense.

For sure Sony will try to spin this the way they want. Perhaps they were only selling 10 to 1 compared to the 60GB because they were manufacturing and shipping it 10 to 1.

I agree with Hugh, they were probably losing too much money on it. Wifi and a card slot probably doesnt cost them $100, so they end up losing more money on each unit sold.

It's a rather interesting move considering the 360 Elite was just a hair under the price of the 20GB PS3. Now XBOX has that price range all to itself.

Without that cheaper 20 Gig model it will likely be years before I buy a PS3.

It's an interesting development thats for sure. It certainly doesn't bode well for the sony fans to see their company pull out a console version. Even if the 60GB still exists its still technically a 50% PS3 death.

Rumor has it though they plan on releasing a 120-160gb version to compete with the Xbox 360 Elite. It would be damn smart of sony to drop the price of the 60GB unit to whatever the 20GB price was.

I know that is why my family decided to go with the 360 instead of the PS3. Price was a huge concern! I realize that the PS3 is full of new stuff including the b/r player but come on over $700+ for this unit is crazy. Now I should say that for the hardcore gamer and the folks that are true playstation fans if this is your cup of tea then great. But for a family or someone just getting started the price is not going to be a selling point. Our 360 has all the right tech stuff for me and my family. Sony should consider either reducing the price or reducing some of the features to lower the price. I have seen and played with a PS3 and to me it is just not worth the cash they want for it.

Quantumfluxx, your comment re: 50% is baseless.

VE9ARB, you make a good point. Sony's strategy with PS3 was to shift their market demographic from the mainstream to the high-end, probably with the belief that the gaming industry was ready to 'take it up a notch'.

The runaway success of the Wii, though, proves not only that consumers don't agree, but that they were actually willing to push downmarket into lower an even lower end.

XBox360 took the safe route and basically stayed in the same space that PS2 used to occupy. (mainstream gaming machine, no more no less)

It'll be interesting to see if Sony can attract enough people to the high-end to preserve their financial model. Their initial results are not encouraging.

Okay...

Sony profit to rise 'sixfold'
Quote:
Shares in Sony climbed to a five-year high on Friday after a newspaper predicted a sixfold increase in its profits for the current year.
Strong sales of the Playstation 3 could push Sony's pre-tax income to 400bn yen ($3.4bn; £1.7bn), a sharp increase on the 60bn yen expected for 2006.

Newspaper predictions don't amount to squat. The reality is PS3 isn't the great "second coming" Sony thought it would be. Sony seems more intent on selling it as a Bluray player than a game machine considering the high price and lukewarm support from the big game industries like EA sports ID software, etc. Game writers aren't exactly flocking to the PS3 format and releasing big titles as much as the 360 when it launched.

That's an interesting spin on Sony going high-end with the console marketing strategy. I suspect it may have more to do with the subsidy budget running out - they were probably losing more money per 20GB model than the higher end ones.

When there are strong sales of the PS3, that could actually happen!

HT Gearhead, read the bold portion of the quote: "Shares in Sony climbed to a five-year high"
