Default HDTV Blog Article regarding buying an HDTV

That's the catchy name of a blog entry at http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=458 George Ou sums up the conventional wisdom...
  • If you really need a honking big picture, go projection.
  • Go flat-panel LCD below 50" (watch the size creep up in the next few months).
  • Insist on an built-in ATSC tuner, otherwise, fuggedaboutit.
  • No point in buying overpriced "Monster Cables".
  • No point in buying an overpriced TV, if a lower-priced one has all the features you need/want
  • Talks about why 120 hz LCD displays can handle 24 fps movies better.
  • Website has downloadable colour-shade-test pictures for comparing TV sets. These are NOT meant for calibration, but rather to compare the colour resolution of calibrated TV sets.

An IT guy talking about TV's. No thanks.

Cautioning us about plasmas with 1024X768 resolution? Every 42" plasma runs at this resolution with the exception of the upcoming 42PZ700 from Panasonic.

Also talking about burn-in on sets that were displaying static images for 2 years????

Then he ends it off with saying the cheapest LCD has better quality than the best projection. Is he saying some no name brand using an early generation panel is better than a SXRD XBR??

LOL what a joke!

Well panny is actually bringing out 5 new HDTV sizes from April to June which are 1080p and not 1024X768, other companies will be bringing theirs out as well soon enough. I would imagine 1024x768 will be the past. Give it a year or two.

My rule of thumb is do your research, know your budget, shop for a TV that suites your needs within your budget.
Too many of these how to buy a TV articles out there.

What I was trying to get at was this guy is focusing too much on resolution. 1024x768 is fine for 42" and 1366x768 is the norm for 50" plasma. Resolution is only one of the many aspects of good picture quality.
