OTTAWA-GATINEAU — The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today released its statistical and financial summaries for private conventional television, reporting on the industry’s revenues, expenditures and profitability from 2002 to 2006. While television station revenues held steady across Canada, expenditures rose by 7.8%, which reduced profits before interest and taxes (PBIT) from $242.2 million in 2005 to $91 million in 2006. The PBIT margin also decreased from 11.02% in 2005 to 4.14% in 2006.

It's an absolute disgrace according to this report:

In 2006, conventional television stations spent a whopping $688.3 million for foreign television programming compared to $613.2 million for Canadian television programming according to numbers released by the CRTC this week.

The report found that TV broadcasters increased expenditures on foreign programming by 12.2% from $613.2 million in 2005 to $688.3 million in 2006.

When it came to Canadian programming, broadcasters spent $73.9 million on drama and $101.6 million on general interest programming. Add it up and Canadian broadcasters only spent 7.5% of there total programming budget on Canadian drama and general interest programming.

This really is disgusting. CTV/Global etc, while they do porvide us with lots of entertainment, they are bringing in the money by the truck load (simsub = $$$). Yet Global is too cheap to get their HD up and running and CTV's Canadian pride and joy is eTalk.
