I was going to post this on another thread that sort of was going in this direction but though it best not to hijack someone else's thread.
When I got my $39.99 for Digital VIP I also asked for the 3 months specialty channels that others on this board got. They only game me 2 months, but that's OK. When I was dealing with the call centre, like others on this board, the the CSR did not seem to know what I was talking about and had to put me on hold to consult with others. Coming back they were prepared to give me what I had asked. When I went to pick up my box, the guy at Rogers Video said he couldn't see the record of this deal in my account so he proceeded to find the various codes for the deal and include them in my account, without hesitation. The terms of the deal didn't phase him as it did for the call centre CSR. It gave me the impression that these guys know more about what deals are available than the CSR in the call centre. Then I thought, is there someplace where these deals are listed that the public can access to maximize their cable dollar? Maybe we should have a stickie somewhere on this board where we can list these deals so everyone knows what they are, to counteract Roger's secrecy on these deals. |

I remember googling "rogers ditch the dish promotion" or "rogers satellite winback promotion" at one point and finding something -- I believe it was a .pdf file. It was not hosted on the rogers.com domain, but I don't recall the domain name. It think it was some advertisin/promotional company that Rogers contracted out to come up with the deal.
I just did a search and found this: http://www.n-m-s.com/promo.htm I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules for posting this. |

Ditch the Dish has been on the Rogers site for a long time, as far as I know. It's under promotions.
http://www.shoprogers.com/store/cabl...lite_offer.asp The "free" Specialty Theme Pack offer is clearly described there too -- and, yes, it's for two months now, not three. http://www.shoprogers.com/store/cabl...ns/default.asp There's nothing especially "secret" about any of these. |

I told Rogers I was leaving for Bell and first they offered to give us 3 digital boxes (same as Bell) for 39.99 a month for a year, but later said they thought we were going to give them a dish and the other digital boxes would have been part of a trade in, so the 2 extra boxes were not part of the deal anymore.
Now the deal is 39.99 a month for a year and I noticed we're getting the specialty channels (DIVA, IFC, TROPW and CNBC to name a few - stations we weren't getting since the preview ended). They never told us they were going to give us those channels at all. I thought maybe those channels had become standard part of VIP, now I'm not so sure. I guess they're just going to be available free for a couple of months. |

If I were to call up at the end of that period and say I'm going back to EVU, what are the chances that they would give me this anyway as a retention effort. (or should I call them at this point, seeing as how I just started up again with Rogers on this promo ?) thoughts ?...... anyone ?

"Only" gives you a free PVR for 24 months ... if it's HD that $480 in rental payments. Two years later your PVR from Bell would be ready for retirement presumably ... so, really, that's not bad. It balances out your "loss" from the previous supplier and you get other goodies.
Some people may choose to switch every couple of years to play the offer game. I'd be more inclined to choose my provider because of the ongoing entertainment and information value: a selection of channels I want, a good price, good technical delivery, and perhaps extras I can't find elsewhere that I enjoy -- in Rogers case, On Demand and Super Sports Pak come to mind. |

Agreed.
I'm not much on churn as having to sweat the details of a switch every 2 years or so isn't worth the aggravation or perceived savings for me. For others, it's the thrill of the hunt I suppose. I left Rogers 9 years ago as Bell was offering their Totalvision digital cable market trial in my area and when it concluded they offered us free stb and install if we signed on for a year. The packages they offered at the time gave me more freedom to choose than the offering from Rogers back then. As time passed, I grew less satisfied with EVU's HD performance and getting nickel and dimed because I didn't want to change my subscription so that I'd be paying more $ for fewer channels that I'd actually watch in order to keep those that I did watch (if that makes any sense). So now that I am back to Rogers, I'm quite happy. On a performance/variety basis, the PQ on the HD is better IMO to what i was getting with either my 6100 or 6000 box on my 57". Better black levels really enhance the pic and a seemingly higher bitrate also contributes to a more dynamic colour palette. The picture is certainly different and so far appears to be better. Plus the opportunity of watching TCM and AMC is a big plus as I prefer the older, seldom seen classics over TMN's offering. And the prospect of Rescue Me on Showcase in HD this summer is very appealing as well. The one down side is that Rogers don't offer a box that has vertical compression on it and my 4:3 Tosh 'hd-ready' set does not have this circuit so unless Toshiba still has HDP-1 add-on modules available at this late date, I'm scuppered on one of my HD sets. But the 57" looks so-o-o-o-o-o good, I think I'll get over it.

Well, I was until I got my first bill today.
For some unknown reason I was put on bi-monthly billing, but they billed me for 2 mos and 3 weeks. The winback discounts for the 2 years free hd & Hd-PVR terminals weren't on the bill. There was a balance forward for $9.53 that they said was an adjustment from my final bill in October 1997 (?). No bill was received in that amount, no payment was sent. The 'associate' rep with whom I spoke told me that the new VIP rate was $59.99/mo (and then less the 12 mo $10.00/mo discount), contrary to the brochure and promo flyer that I held which clearly stated $46.99/mo net. So all in all, I received a bill for just over $250, which has since been reduced to about $150.00 for this 2.76 month period. Not off to a good start here.
