Default The Room

I have been planning this theater room for 3 years and finally started mid September.
The goal is to be in before Christmas but that might be optimistic.
I am doing all the finish work myself so the work is not happening as quickly as I would like.
The plan is to have a 60" plasma on the wall with an electric drop down 120" screen in front.
The old 65" Toshiba will go on this wall until my pocket book recovers from building the room.
We are planning on drapes with black out linings for the 3 windows but I am confused as to the best screen to purchase in terms of gain and style, there will be no speakers behind the screen.

L8NVR, that looks nice! I'm not sure I dig those walls on either side of the screen, though. I hope there aren't any seats so far off to the side of the room that they can't see the whole screen. And do those extra walls cause problems with boomy bass?

cheers,
supervij

there are some beautiful homes and systems here. This is our meager attempt at home theater. Some new equipment, some kinda old. The room is 12'x30' and contains our front door, living room (home theater), dinning room and a kitchen. Plans are to kick the renters out of the basement in the summer and start on a dedicated room down there. We can only get TFC OTA and it's all analog... Maybe someday we will see a digital OTA signal, but I am not holding my breath.

1X B&W LCR6 SII Center

Channelmaster 3020
assortment of cables

and the 603 in the corner with the DS6 way up over the window. Perfect locations for both... I am too embarrassed to show a pic of the other side...

I like those B&W speakers, first time I've seen a center channel speaker sitting vertical like that.

Thanks, it surprises me a bit that more home theaters don't incorporate a vertical center. Most speakers have a better dispersion in the vertical position and it usually results ( I dare say will always) in a smoother frequency response. I would assume that's why we NEVER see horizontal drivers in our towers that we use for our mains.

We talk about timbre matching and speaker placement, but rarely do we see three of the same speakers up front, in the same orientation. I wish I had room to use one of the 603s as a center.

I don't know if you can tell from the pictures, but the center is also tilted so that the focal point is at the listening position. It makes a huge difference.

The other thing I notice is that a lot of guys have a huge separation between their speakers and their screens. I have been playing with the idea of lifting my mains up a little to locate the tweeters in about the middle of the screen. It bugs me to have the soundstage lost off the screen. I don't know if that makes sense??

the Dude is absolutely correct about the better dispersion in the vertical position. I saw an article over at audioholics that examined the dispersion of different types of speakers with each one sitting horizontally and then vertically. The vertical positions were almost always better. I wish I could switch my centre to vertical, but the way everything's set up in my gear, it would either look ridiculous (and be visually distracting) or it would be in the way of other components. I just want my centre to be as close to the middle of the screen as possible, which is tough with an actual TV as opposed to an acoustically transparent screen!

Your idea about lifting your mains seems to make intuitive sense. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

cheers,
supervij
