Comcast HDTV cable box - Canadian TV, Computing and Home Theatre Forums

I just purchased a Digital cable box DCT 6200 from a third party on Ebay. I'm having trouble getting it to work. Do I need to contact Comcast (I do have an account with Comcast with another box from Comcast with a DVR) to have them activate this box? My Seller had me "download" something and it was doing whatever it does and I though it was working. Now when I turn on the box all I get on the display screen is (0) NO picture still, and I can't get any other channels to stay on display. HELP!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I live in Illinois just outside Chicago. Thanks!

Based on my experience on a US forum, Comcast will not activate a purchased STB - you can call them and they'll confirm. They will only activate a STB that you rent from them, usually for a reasonable rate. I'm sorry, but you have likely purchased a doorstop, that you may wish to sell to some other unsuspecting (American) person who also has not done their research, or perhaps a Canadian who IS able use it with their service provider.

It's usually better in the U.S. to go through the company instead of attempting to get your own. That fee you pay a month for that box gives you support for it as well. They probably won't give you support but then again call or go by the office, who knows?

I appreciate the three replies...I will probably not keep it. I did my research too late I should of asked these questions before I won it on Ebay. I did not know of this website though...Live and Learn! Thanks to all who replied.
