Default The Departed: Blu Ray outsells HD-DVD

Well, this can't bode well for HD-DVD. The biggest release on both formats so far this year and Blu Ray outsells HD-DVD by >50%

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...85b0b4a91643fa

"Blu-ray shines

The scales continue to tip in favor of Blu-ray. Warner Home Video's "The Departed," which streeted the same day (Feb. 13) on both next-gen formats, sold more than 23,000 Blu-ray discs but just 15,000 HD DVDs its first week in stores, according to Home Media Magazine market research estimates.

The problem with reports like this is the lack of attribution. Where does the data come from? A number of large retail channels do not report to media research companies. Does the data include Canada?

We really have no idea how many copies of each version was actually moved. I would much rather see data that could be attributed perhaps even to Warner itself.

Wrong forum. Moving.

The departed is a bad example to use since the HD DVD disc was a hybrid and thus more expensive.

WB is happy with HD sales on both formats so don't expect them to drop HD DVD.

Besides, this summer WB will be coming out with THD so this sort of stat will no longer exist.

On what planet does 23,000 vs. 15,000 equate to >50%?!?!?

The important thing to remember is that there are maybe 10 TIMES more Blu-ray players out there, so all these numbers really prove is that most PS3 owners are not interested in Blu-ray movie playback.

Earth
15,000 x 150% = 22,500

Not necessarily... perhaps they would rather rent? Or maybe they don't want the Departed? It is too early to make any true assessments, but it is still my opinion is that the PS3 will have a significant effect in the format war.

Do you honestly think that people who own HD-DVD players would refrain from purchasing this release because of a few dollars difference? If anything, the fact that it's a hybrid release is good for HD-DVD because it can also be sold to people that don't even own an HD-DVD player yet, who are planning on buying one in the future.

BTW, the Amazon sales rank also show the BD release outselling HD-DVD on both .ca and .com. In .ca it's 943 for BD and 2,293 for HD-DVD.

hmmm... so much for the 2:1 sales ratio.

IMO this shows BD has only gained ground due to the massive release schedule lately. It seems when it comes down to head to head numbers on similar titles, BD really isn't as far ahead as the BDA would like to think.

And yeah it is 50%... but 3 is also 50% more than 2 so take it for what it's worth.

At the present time early adaptors dominate the purchases of these devices. Plenty of them, like myself, own both formats.

So, if the BD version is cheaper for the same movie, it wouldn't be a shock if folks like me bought the BD version.

On another note, WB refuses to release numbers so any sales numbers is pure speculation.

Time for a math lesson:

Determining Percentage

Example: 68 is what percent of 87?

* Divide the first number by the second (e.g. 68 ÷ 87 = 0.7816)
* Multiply the answer by 100 (Move decimal point two places to the right) (e.g. 0.7816*100 = 78.16)
* Round to the desired precision (e.g. 78.16 rounded to the nearest whole number = 78)
* Follow the answer with the % sign (e.g. 68 is 78% of 87)

23,000 sales is >50% more sales than is 15,000. It is correct math and the number of Departed BD sold is >50% more than the HD DVD Departed sold (according to those numbers). You can argue that that it's not a valid statistic or overall sales determiner, but it's valid math and percentage.

Whats most interesting here is not the ratio of BD to HD DVD discs sold. It's that a major release like this sold such a small number in total. It only goes to prove that neither format can really be called a success yet.

yep, you have to take the 15000 as 100%, and therefore BD is >50% more. If BD sold 30000 it would be 100% more.

In regards to the math, I think they are saying BD sold 8,000 more units and 8,000 / 15,000 is 53.33%
