When the receiver is "off" (both outputs) it allows EPG updates, firmware updates, key changes and programming reauthorizations. (although the last 2 items also occur when the unit is "on")

There are no (real) power savings as even though there is no output to your TV, the unit is still running to perform the actions listed above. The only real difference is that the TV outputs are disabled (although even that could be argued due to the logo/screensaver).

my 9242 always goes to screensaver if not used for 3 hours. And at 4:00am, it shuts down to update guide. and it gives you a full 1 minute warning so you can cancel if you're watching something. I don't have a problem with any of that.

If it bothers you being on all the time, try unplugging it every time you want it off. You could buy one of those inline power cord switches at your local dollar store. Let us know how that works out.

Yes the HDD runs while in standby. Typically, it's harder on the HDD if you keep shutting it down, and spinning it back up. Like a diesel, it's better to keep it running. Only downfall is it does eat some power while spinning.

When you are recording a program, and then start watching it while its still recording, is it normal for the skip and FF buttons to keep telling you its in "Live Mode" and not want to respond?

I was recording a playoff game a week ago because I usually miss the first 30min due to work, and when I started watching and tried to skip a commercial it wouldnt let me. I have to pause it first, then quickly set it to FF (at which point I can FF as far as I want) and then it works. Just a bit weird.

I often start watching a program while it is still recording and have not yet had a problem. I find this one of the best features, start the program late to get the kids to bed or just to be able to skip the commercials. I normally press "PVR", select the program recording and then select "start over". If I select "view" (or watch, or whatever is it), then it puts it to live mode.

I've found that with the 9242, it's not wise to try to watch a program that's recording (at least in single mode). I usually get the video freezing, and the audio plays on. Once the recording is done, I can watch it, but it's mucked up a lot trying to do it on the fly.

Luis A51, "normal" I guess is a relative term. No, it probably shouldn't do it, but until they fix the firmware it will do it.

Default Replace 320 GB hard drive in 9242

Hi,
I am thinking of replacing my 320 GB SATA drive in the 9242 with a 500 GB, or saving my files from the hard drive to my PC. I know this may void warranty, but I have noticed that with long cables, I can connect the hard drive to my PC without breaking the "Warranty Void if broken" seal.

I dont want to play the files on my PC, I just want to save some good programs on my PC, incase I want to play them again on my PVR.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Question PVR recording different channel...

I just had a weird recording error on my 9242. I have it set to record two daily soap operas for my wife in the afternoon(I watched the weather network today before leaving for work); The PVR shows the programs had been recorded (names, channel and right times of the programs are on the PVR recorded list) but instead it plays back the weather network on both!
Anyone have had anything similar happen?

Yes this has been mentioned before. The Weather Network is a strange channel. Probably because of the local downloads, it doesn't behave like the others. I notice for on thing that you can't record it nor can you run a prerecorded program from your PVR when you are tuned to this service.

My wife and I never leave the PVR (BEV 9200) on the Weather Network. After we watch it we switch over to CTV Newsnet. That way there's never a problem with the timers.

Okay, our 9200 was having power issues, it kept powering down and starting up on it's own and sice we're renting it we got the 9242 to replace it.

Not wanting to read all 32 pages of this thread, can someone tell me if there's a way to transfer programs from the PVR to my computer on the old 9200 and now the new 9242 without doing anything to the inards?
What's the USB connections on the PVR's for?
Thanks.

The short answer is no.

The USB ports are not active at this time.

You may want to read this thread

But I'm not sure if it works with current firmware versions any more and requires access to the HDD.

Okay, thanks.
But I could run outputs to the computer I guess and 'record' them that way¿ Might be an idea to run cables from my den to family room maybe...
... course then I'd need to install something in the computer, what would you suggest? Might be time for an upgrade anyhow, don't have a dual layer burner yet either...

... or I guess I could get a DVD recorder with a hard drive and record them that way. Do you know if they are dual layer?

There was a few programs on the old PVR I'd like to keep, concerts etc...
