Default Trade LG 42PD1DA for a Panasonic TH-42PX60

Hey guys just picked up the LG on wednesday night and thursday night playing xbox hockey I noticed 1 bad pixel since most of the ice surface was white. The guy at Futureshop said I can bring it back no problem... 30 day guarantee... I called LG and their warranty will only replace under warranty a tv that has at least 7 bad pixels... now if one is that noticeable... imagine 6 or 7 haha. Anyways I also called Panasonic and it sounds like they basically cover anything that is not physical damage to the set... including even 1 bad pixel.

I'm considering taking the LG back and getting the Panasonic model but also adding the 4yr warranty for an additional $500. The LG looks great and all and has a 2yr warranty which is great... the Panasonic only has a 1yr warranty.

The LG was $1999.99 and the Panasonic I could get for $1949.99

What would you all do? You're the experts!!!

Thanks!

would you go with the extended warranty for $500 to
be completely covered for 4yrs rather than just 1yr?

Check out the Digital Home FAQ re: Extended Warranties, here:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=17872

For a plasma I would not purchase an extended warranty since most hardware will fail during the initial warranty period i.e.: stuck pixels and the like. As well, warranties will not cover something like burn-in as that is something the user can mitigate.

Thanks again... I've never ever wanted to purchase an extended warranty before and even hated the though of it... that all changed when I seen that 1 bad pixel... I've never had an electronics problem with any of my purchases before... now the "what if..." has set in.

After reading those posts though... I should stop worrying... 1yr full warranty should be good... I'm extremely careful with my stuff anyways. I would however hate to see it failt after the 1yr mark and still have 2yrs to pay for it on the 36mo/payment plan. The difference is about $14/mo just for the warranty.

If you read the linked article in the thread that I linked to, you will find that many Extended Warranties are not as comprehensive as they appear to be, and that they are one of the biggest cash grabs in the industry since profit margins on some electronics are so low.
Consider that the plasma displays you are looking at are selling for < $2000 now, when a few short months (weeks) ago they were selling well above that, then you will realize that the stores are trying to recoup some of their losses by pushing Extended Warranties.

Definately go with the Panny... I had 1 dead pixel and sure enough my TH42PX60 was replaced.

Panasonic also offers their own extended warranty if you're feeling jumping. I believe you can buy it up to 1 year after you purchased the tv.

I also wouldn't hesitate to trade the LG for the Panny, excellent choice!

Go with the Panasonic.
I've had the 50PX60U for over a month now and I am very happy with it. PQ is awesome!

supercoo the LG plasma you have does give a very good picture especially if you were to go into the service menu and adjust etc.. The LG servicemenu give you lots of adjustments for the person who knows what they are doing.

I currently use a older LG 42PX4D in my study. I have found that on the LG plasma the picture tend to have a green bias.

I went into the service menu used a greyscale picture from dve and dropped the G drv 2 point and the G cut from 64 to 62. Did this for all color temps. This made a huge improvement in the picture quality. Color are more accurate.

That said if you have one bad pixel I know with a new tv that would bother me and I would get the set exchanged either for a new one same model if you like your set.

The Panny is also a great set. I also like the picture on the panny smooth and clean.

Panasonic does have the best warranty program when it comes to replacing a set.

Well I picked up the Panasonic TH-42PX60U yesterday morning and got it all hooked up. I'm really happy with it and it's working great so far. I like this one a lot more than the LG as far as looks and quality. The stand is far more solid than the LG was. The only things I liked more about the LG was the menu and the remote. I find the Panasonic menu more complicated, I'll have to use the book.

Thanks again for all our input and suggestions!
