Default Transfering Outlook personal folders to new computer.

Hi.
My old machine at work which was running 98se has just been replaced with another which runs in the XP environment.
I've installed my old drive as a slave on the new machine. It's been great for transferring documents , pictures and parts drawings over to the new computer.

But, how do I export the contents of all of my OUTLOOK email folders and email addresses from my old drive to the new one? I need to be able to access recent emails and I also don't want to have to re-type all of my contacts...

I've looked around at lot on the Internet, and still don't have a definitive answer.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

If you've got everything in a single personal folder (i.e one .pst file) on the old computer just close Outlook on that one, copy the .pst file to the new computer and when you open Outlook on the new computer just point to the copied .pst file.

file,
Import/export,
then export to a file.
Select Personal folder (pst) as your export type. Select the folder you want to export (you may want to move them into a subfolder to make sure you only get the ones you want)
click, next,
save the file to your desktop, or some other place.
then if you want to password proctect the file you can do that on the next screen.
when you click ok, your done.

Now go to the desktop,
import/export,
import a file,
pick Personal folder file (pst),
point to the file (which you can point to a CD if needed)
then you will be asked where you want the files to go.

1. Set up all the accounts you had on your old system (empty by now). Close Outlook Express.
2. Do a search for "inbox" on all hard drives.
3. You will get two locations (at least): on the old drive and new one.
The location on XP will look something like this
C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{6B7BBE17-E660-4869-91BE-68169F48374A}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

4.Copy everything from the old location to the new one. Open Oulook Express.

Default Eureka!

Thanks a million, guys.
Everything is up and running, and now I look like a genius.

You wouldn't believe some of the instructions I read on the Internet. It's nice to belong to a service where you can get good hands-on advice.

All the best,

Scott

Be aware that my post concerned only doing the procedure in OUTLOOK not OUTLOOK EXPRESS. The OP said he was using OUTLOOK.

Thanks Poolshark, I missed that distinction. I use Outlook and should've noticed that.

I have do this operation on my Uncle's pc and likely he is using outlook express (I haven't seen his pc yet and it is hard getting details from him over the phone).

I just did a transfer from an old machine(running XP) to a newer machine(XP). I use outlook express. Setup the email accounts in the new machine, then use the file and settings transfer wizard in the old machine and use the custom tab. Select Settings only and uncheck any program settings you don't want. I was only interested in the email messages. This creates a file containing the information. On the new computer run the wizard and at some point it will ask for where the information is. My computers are networked so I had the info in a shared folder that it could access.
There may be an easier way to do this, this worked although with multiple users on the same machine I had to create identities for everything to work properly as bookmarks and addresses kept getting copied into both accounts.

Once I got my head around the .pst thing, it was fairly easy.

Posts 2 and 4 struck the most resonant chords in my feeble understanding of computers....
The Outlook dialog box for importing/exporting stuff is kind of clumsy though. It is easy to choose the wrong option.
