Default Vanishing Point

Vanishing Point

Awesome early 70s movie about a cross multiple states car chase. Brainless fun!

The video was very good and audio not too bad I guess. The surrounds are active and all but there's not alot of punch to the older soundtrack like more modern blu-rays.

Default Blue Planet & The Dream Is Alive

Blue Planet
An IMAX film. Space scenes filmed by the shuttle astronauts. Looks marvellous in HD. Narrator could be better. Script very uninspired.

The Dream Is Alive
Also IMAX. Shot early in the Shuttle program. Includes brief shot of Canadian astronaut Marc Garneau. Opening scene of shuttle landing shows off your subwoofer. Shuttle liftoffs are unbelievable for both PQ and AQ. Shots from outer space are spectacular on a big screen. Narration by Walter Cronkite is priceless.

Note: Both movies on same disc. No extras. Good demo. disc.

Default First Blood

First Blood aka Rambo

Finally picked this up, got it for 10 bucks! Great movie, nothing like part 2 and up which is a very good thing. Has a good story, great action and the acting isn't bad either!

The PQ was outstanding! AQ is missing thump but surround wise it works.

I watched The Spirit tonight. The movie itself was definitely not that great, but not as bad as I was expecting based on what I've read and heard. The PQ, I must say, was simply outstanding. It had an amazing bitrate of what had to be 30Mbps as an average. Can't speak on the AQ as I haven't completed putting my new audio system together, but I'm sure it's a strong track due to the DTS-HD MA soundtrack the disc contains.
I would recommend this simply for the PQ and especially for the 'eye-candy' of this movie; it's too bad it wasn't anywhere as good as Sin City, but what can you do?

hc666, have you seen the newest Rambo? It will literally blow you away on BD. The PQ is great but is the audio that really shines. Lionsgate to my knowledge is the only studio pushing DTS-HD MA or PCM 7.1 tracks on all of its titles. I own this and have watched at least five times, favorite movie.

At Blockbuster you can get full-week BD rentals at $3.99 each of 3 for $8.99. I rented "War", "Black Hawk Down", and "Deja Vu". Really looking forward to the 7.1 PCM track on "War", and apparently the A/V experience of Black Hawk is insane too.

Watched "Yes Man" and "Quantam of Solace" last week. QoS blew me away, the other one was a comedy so not too much to expect sound-wise. PQ was good and just the movie itself was pretty funny, not as much as I expected though.

Watched two movies last night, well one and a half really...2/3 way through "War" the disc started jumping and freezing for some reason...there didn't seem to be any noticeable defects on the disc physically though. To make sure it wasn't my HTPC I threw in Deja'Vu and it played fine so must be the disc.

After watching Deja'Vu I have to say that is the nicest looking BD I've watched so far(QoS is close if not at par though). Almost every scene in that movie looks stunning. The 5.1 PCM track isn't up there will the 7.1 PCM or DTS-HD MA on some of the Lionsgate titles, like "War", but it was still good. Partially this is because there isn't the same level of action so the rear surrounds aren't used as much, still a great track and a great movie as I had never seen it before. If you can wrap your head around the whole "bending space" idea you should really enjoy it.

Will be watching "Black Hawk Down" tonight which is another 5.1 PCM track and 2:40:1 pic.

Thumbs up Hellraiser

Hellraiser

Total classic horror flick. One of my all time faves, after 22 years it still rocks!

The PQ on the bluray is ok, I would give it a 3/5. Day scenes look great, dark scenes not so much and most of the movie is dark. The scene where Frank Cotton is ressurected is amazing! They don't them like that anymore!

AQ was really good, compared to the other horror flicks on blu by Anchor Bay(day of the dead...etc), Hellraiser sounds terrific!

Default The Wrestler

The Wrestler

Very very very good move. And I must say I have always had a thing for Marisa Tomei, wow she looks amazing in this!!!! hehehe!

PQ and AQ are great.

Anyone who has seen a once big time wrestler now performing in front of 40 ppl at a local gymnasium will really appreciate this flick.

Watched Frost/Nixon last night. This was last weeks big title. Ron Howard is very underrated IMHO.

That being said, the movie was good but left you wanting more (outside of the extras) especially more behind the scenes information with the Frost Camp.

The Golden Compass - In a parallel universe in which souls exist as "daemon" animal companions, the malevolent and oppressive Catholic Church...errr, Magisterium seeks to suppress research and knowledge and, by "cutting away" daemons from their young human counterparts, to create a society of unquestioning and obedient followers. Caught up in all this is Lyra, whose uncle has incurred the wrath of the Magisterium by seeking to uncover the mysteries of universe-connecting Dust, and whose best friend has been taken away to the far North to have his daemon cut away. Before long, and with the help of her truth-revealing alethiometer, she's up to her neck in Gobblers, Gyptians, Samoyeds, Ice Bears and Witches. Can she save her uncle and her friend without losing her daemon to the machinations of the evil Mrs. Coulter?

This is a visually stunning, moderately entertaining and rather busy film. Ms. Richards' performance was absolutely wonderful and, in my opinion, is one of the highlights of the movie.

This was my first Blu-ray movie on the updated HT. The PQ was beautiful: Vibrant colours, solid blacks, excellent contrast in even the darkest scenes, and no hint of video noise or artifacts. The 7.1-channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack was very well-balanced. (I wonder what the PQ and AQ of the DVD are like.)

Watched "Transporter" and will be watching "Transporter 2" tonight as well. I watched Transporter 3 about a month ago, you can tell the difference between the 7.1 and 5.1 tracks but the 5.1 are still great. Just overall a good movie experience, not completely over-the-top like some. Obviously the third has the best PQ but the first one still looked great. Also will be watching "Miami Vice" tonight or tomorrow. Rented "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" but just couldn't get into it. 1:78:1 CG looks great(even better in "Resident Evil: Degeneration") but I just couldn't get into the movie.

Miami vice, PQ wise, Is a big disappointment but apparently the director intended it to look this way. 95% of the film is shot in the dark/night scenes using HD cameras, and the 2:40:1 ratio doesn't help with all the dark scenes. There are many artifacts and a ton of noise...if you can go from watching the Transporter movies to this is the same night without going insane, let me know. Audio wise it is great though, as are most action movies with a lossless track. Think I'm going to go rent RE: Degeneration again tonight(last time I watched didn't have 7.1). It is one of the best BD releases PQ wise I have seen do to the CG and true 16:9 ratio. As for new releases only movie coming that interests me is "Taken" which was awesome in theaters.

Pinocchio Platinum 75th anniversay edition.

This was always one of my favourites as a kid (with Peter Pan), and the Disney studio did this total justice. they didn't boost the color like crazy (as they did in Sleeping Beauty), and the remastered tracks are great. Felt myself misting up when Jiminy Cricket was singing "When you wish upon a star" - best Disney song ever.

Too bad the aspect ratio on this one was a bit funny, but watched it with the sidebars and it was great. Totally worth the buy, especially as it comes with a DVD for the kids too.
