Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Not bad... one of the few new movies that my wife can watch with me....

Could have been better with explosions, gunfire, carnage....oh wait,.... that would be a guy movie.

Next up from zip dot ca... the latest installation of Indiana Jones on Blu Ray

Frozen River - Ray's gambling-addicted husband has left her for parts unknown and her job at the Yankee Dollar store doesn't pay her enough to be able to afford the double-wide trailer home she so dearly wants for her two sons. A fateful encounter with Lila, a young Mohawk woman, offers her the chance to make some quick money smuggling illegal aliens across the frozen St. Lawrence from the Canadian side of the reservation to the US.

This is a little, low-budget movie that likely would have disappeared with barely a whimper were it not for the surprise Oscar nomination for Melissa Leo, who plays Ray. It's a worthy nomination, as her anguish and desperation drive the film to its somewhat unlikely, sloppy ending.

The film looks like it was shot with an HD camera, and it suffers in the numerous dark scenes, which are a little muddy and noisy.

Pride and Glory - A solid cast, Colin Farrell, Edward Norton, Noah Emmerich, Jon Voight, does yeoman's work in this grim tale about the blood that is shed when familial bonds clash with corruption in the NYPD. What the movie lacks in original ideas or flashy execution, it makes up with grit, violence and brutality.

The latest in the seemingly more frequent trend of Canadian distributors unable to release movies on Blu-Ray at the same time as their dvd release (there was a three week lag for this movie), this is a solid transfer, grainy but sharp, with nice pop in the daylight scenes.

Is the Blu-Ray worth buying Serenity for the 3rd time?

On a related note - is this a dead series? Any chance of further movies or episodes?

Don't think so, rfielder. Whedon is pretty busy with DOLLHOUSE (this Friday, set your PVR), and numerous jobs writing comics and screenplays. It would be great, though, wouldn't it?

Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Vicky and Cristina spend the summer in Barcelona as a last adventure before Vicky gets married. They meet a smooth-talking painter who has designs on both of them. But while Vicky battles her own desire to break from her conventional, predictable path, Cristina ends up battling her new lover's unconventional relationship with his fiery ex-wife.

I'm not a fan of Woody Allen films, but seeing as I'll be visiting Barcelona in a few months, I rented this to whet my appetite. Alas, while the scenery was beautiful (both human and environs), the story did nothing for me.

The Blu-Ray is a mixed bag, some of the scenes look great, while others are soft and muddy. AQ, as with all Woody Allen films, is mono, and unremarkable (what's with his affection for mono sound anyway? Does he watch his own movies on an old 19-inch tv with just the built-in tinny speakers?).

Changeling - Christine Collins is a loving single mom whose son, Walter, goes missing one day. When police tell her he's been found, abandoned by a drifter at a diner in Illinois, and arrange a tearful reunion, she insists the boy isn't her son. And so begins her over-wrought, histrionic journey to try to refute the police assertions and perhaps one day find her real son.

Terrible movie, gorgeously shot. Nice looking Blu-Ray.

Default The Stendhal Syndrome

The Stendhal Syndrome

Was an ok movie, never saw it before... blind buy. I will probably never watch it again so I'm feeling a bit ripped off but that's my bad.

Audio was ok and the video was colorful and detailed but had constant noise throughout the movie... it wasn't grain but just noise. Was letdown a bit.

Default Planet Earth

My first blue ray experiance on my system I just put together last night ( which took all day and several buying trips for pieces of this and that as a older system wasn't going to make it, so new samsung 2550, new onkyo 875. new synergy 10" sub and many monster cables and oh ya movies) of which one was Planet Earth absolutely worth the big bucks I dropped on the system.
I saw pieces of it on cbc OTA DTV a while back and with the high end audio of the blue ray it was a even greater experiance. I never collected cassettes, cds, or dvds but I will start a collection of this format.
