My understanding is that this is really a moot point, since LCDs can only display progressive scan anyways. It's really nothing more than a minor irritant since the end result is the same, so long as the Toshiba can do a good job upconverting the signal.

Is my understanding correct? Also, has a firmware update ever been released for this unit? I'd think 1080p native input could be accomplished thru software...

I can definately say that the shadowing issue was a glitch. Only thing is the TV has to be replaced again! There is a little circle pixel? that stays lit green with this unit. Ho well long live warrenty service! Makes me think though did they do something like FS would do by simply brigning me somebody elses return? I am trying to get me a 47" for all the trouble.

This replacement is flawless! At the end of the day the problem is resolved and I have a new TV 3 Months after purchasing it not bad

after 3 months of arguing i'm having my 42HL196 replaced for the same TV but with a build date of January 07 instead of Nov 06.

I witnessed the TV in action at the store and appears to be no white bars or banding of any sort which is what ppl have been saying about the models with a build date of greater than Nov 06.

Looks good... get it on Thursday at my house

I decided to call Toshiba due to still experiencing shadowing issues with my 3rd panel. Turns out the place that serviced my TV is no longer authorized by Toshiba I will save a program or movie that demonstartes the issue and call the new place...

Got my 42HL196 replacement set... Jan 07 Build Date... no Ghost bars or banding! Finally!!!

I looked at the build of my latest panel it was made in Oct 06 and like I mentioned I am still having some of those issues. I called Toshiba back, I asked if there was a chance that my replacement panel may have been a refurb, the rep told me that 99% of replacement units are refurbs I told him that this was not acceptable. That I did not have this TV that long. Toshiba took my info and is submitting a request that I have a new panel replacement. They will call back within a few days.

Well HC looks like I am in the same boat you are in. Originally Toshiba sent me to the new repair contractor, when I told him that a refurb was not acceptable he referred me back to Toshiba they called on Friday and tried ot re send me to the repair contractor After standing my ground the rep says it is going to be escalated to Head Office on TO, they are suppose to contact me next week.

Bobvan... yeah it's a bunch of crap trying to get anything replaced or fixed.

Luckily I took mine directly to where I bought it, and eventually they caved in and just replaced it. I drove them nuts... called every week haha. Basically said hey I paid 2K+ plus for this and I am not happy... They tried to downplay the internet forums and claim there was nothing wrong with the set. ANyway... sure enough the Jan 07 Build Date of the machine, as mention on the forums, was fine and now I am happy with my set... NO ghost bars

Actually I am going to push for a LZ replacement model so I can utilize the 1080p upconversion of the Oppo, according to one of the reps he told me that refurbs are given due to them not making the current model anymore, my argument is I did not pay for a used TV that anything but a new panel is unacceptable, and that refurbished items are usually sold at a hefty discount. Like I mentioned they dont even have a contract with the service shop that replaced my TV twice anymore. If they are willing to send me a new panel of my current model thats also acceptable. Will see how it goes. The store I bought it from is gonzo so I gotta deal with Toshiba Canada. Like you I am just going to keep on pushing! Drives my wife nuts LOL! and my model is closer to 3K.

(Like the song goes) So...a toshiba rep calls back he asks what has happened. I tell him now it turns out that the original contractor I dealt with is still authorized by Toshiba! I tell him how incompetent my service has been , that their service reps should know what they are talking about. Anyhow I call back the service centre and let them know that I am still experiencing the shading and branding issues. The tech I have been dealing with calls me last evening, I tell him of what the problem still is and I mention how I have done some research on the Internet and what I found out on when the TV was built, he asks that I email him the link. I cut & pasted the relevant section and forwarded it to him. I will see what happens in a few days....

I'm actually a little afraid to ask this, for fear of knowing the results (as they say, ignorance is bliss!). But I gotta know. How can I tell if my Toshiba has "shading and branding issues"? Also, is the "build date" somewhere in the back of the TV, or the manual? Thanks.

If you read the thread only some panels are affected, generally I see what looks like a darker line that form in the centre with certain lighting and movement, also quite often I see what looks like a discolored 2" line approximately 6" away on the right side, you can really see it watching Hockey due the bright backgroud. All I know is I dont see this on panels when I look at TV'S in stores or at Costco the other day. The reason I am kind of happy I still can deal with the 1st cervice centre is the Tech is aware of the issue. Like I said I am more pissed at the reps at Toshiba Customer Service that keep giving me the run around. The build of Oct 06 is shown on a sticker in the back near the serial number. And I am sure a lot of people that are not as detail oriented thinks its normal. Heck I thought the dark branding on my 1st panel was probably a normal thing with LCD technology until I found this board read about it called Toshiba and as soon as the tech saw he told me that I had a defective panel.

Bobvan is right on... also if you switch to an unused input and then crank the backlight and brightness up to 100 each you will see the banding lines as well... my old NOv 06 build date was really bad on the left hand side... white bar... esp during hockey and football or any sort of sky or light color scene where it's moving back and forth...
