Default Audio splitter??

I have a digital audio cable running from my yamaha receiver to my star choice box. The problem is that when I want to watch a DVD i have to switch the cable from my sat box to the dvd player to get digital sound which is a pain in the ass. Is there a splitter out there i can use so i don't have to switch it every time or even better is there a better setup i can use. Thanks for your help!!

Questions:

What is the model of the Yamaha Receiver?

Does it have more than one digital audio input?

Do you have the option of using optical or coaxial for either of the devices?

What type of connection are you using currently?

Yes there are audio switches that would work.

A "combiner" may not work because most STBs are "always on", even when off (standby).

If it is coax audio then you can use almost any cheap composite video switch will work (many do RCA audio and composite video.) If it is optical, that's a bit more expensive and difficult to find.

Currently I am running a coax digital cable from my Yamaha receiver to my sat box and then having to switch it to my dvd player when watching a dvd. My Yamaha reciever has only one digital input. My Tv has both optical and coax so i don't if there is a way I can hook one of either the dvd player or sat box up through the tv. Anyways I hope that clears it up a bit!!

HDTVs do not passthrough DD5.1 signals, so you can't do what you suggest (go through the TV) and maintain DD5.1. Some HDTV will pass DD2.0 or PCM, however, some pass nothing except the signal from the internal digtal tuner of the TV.

You need to connect each device directly to the AVR, or through a switch or combiner depending on the signals/device behaviour.

Do a search on the web for audio switch, or coaxial audio switch.
