Default Power Down Befor Making Input Changes

Hi,

I've read about "handshake" issues before when trying to hook DVI and HDMI cables to PVR's in home entertainment centres.

I made some changes today.
I hooked up the DVI cable between my 9200 PVR and Akai plasma TV, instead of using my usual component cables. But, now there was no video at all. My TV kept searching for the DVI input but found nothing.

Similarly, I also hooked my Xbox up to the TV via "S Video" for the first time today. No picture! Very frustrating.

Out of desperation, I turned off the main breaker to everything in my Home Entertainment centre. After the PVR re-initialized, everything WORKED. The DVI input now functions, as does the S Video.

It's weird, but it seems like my Akai TV needs to power down completely before it will recognize any new video inputs.
This might be old hat to a lot on this board, but I thought it might shed light for some who are frustrated.
I had tried once before to hook up my DVI cable between PVR and TV and it didn't work. That was because I only turned the tv "off" at the remote - - - I didn't completely power the TV down.
An epiphany ! Eureka...

This sounds like an oddity. While it's often recommended to turn off equipment when making connections, one should not have to unplug/replug.

Although the unplug/replug is one of the first things to try if something has not worked as expected - see the Digital Home FAQ (under help) "Things to check first".

Many TV modern electronic gadgets don't really turn off when you flip the switch to "OFF". They go into a "standby mode" instead. This allows for "Instant-On" functionality and allows TV sets to remember what channel you were tuned in to. Looks like it also "remembers" other settings.

That's the weird thing. I tried to hook up the DVI cable about 6 months ago, too. I remember being disappointed that it wouldn't work. I just had to post my results yesterday in case any others out there had the same problem with other TV set brands.
It was almost as though the TV had to re-boot before it would acknowledge the changes I made..... It had to " de -remember" it's previous input arrangements.

I have seen that the operating manuals for some TVs have this listed in the hookup procedure. Summarized as "Hook everything up, THEN plug in the TV".

Therefore, if you make any changes, a TV reboot is required.
