Cool HDMI

I wish the first thing when you have HDMI to DVI problems etc. Star Choice would ask what code you had...

Chances are the receiver had the old code that didn't enable the DVI yet.

Are you taking about what version of software the receiver is using, because one Starchoice tech guy told me it might work when the receiver automatically updated from version .14 to .34. It still didn't work after the update.

Remember to reset the box after you hook up DVI. I find that works 90% of the time.

Also, try playing around with the front panel resolution (red button under the Star Choice logo) because DVI can sometimes be picky about that.

Just to follow up, the DVI female to HDMI male adapter worked for me, with one hitch. This is also present when using component cables, and doesn't affect me at all, but will drive channel surfers nuts.....sometimes there is a two second delay added to changing channels. Of course, this may just be my particular receiver/TV combination, but I'm reasonably certain that's where the delay is coming from. I haven't played around long enough to figure how often or why. Seems to happen when going form an HD channel to a standard def station and vice versa.

So 505 -> DVI cable -> DVI-HDMI Adapter -> Denon 2307 -> Sony KP51WS520 yields no HDCP issues for me. As expected there is no noticeable increase or degradation of PQ.

I haven't been around here for a while, but I've got my 530 hooked up to my HP md5880n via both DVI-HDMI and component, but this is primarily related to a HDMI vs. firmware issue with the RPTV, not the 530 (cc code didn't make a difference). I get red static throughout the hdmi picture that I don't get over component...weird stuff that I haven't had the time to harass HP about, yet...I could go back to older firmware for the tv, but a few other nagging issues were fixed...doesn't pay to go backwards on functionality to go forwards a little on PQ...my wife likes the slightly softer image that component delivers, anyway.

I had my DVR505 and 530 hooked up via component and DVI and did not see any difference in picture quality....certainly not a "softness" that my wife would ever notice.

I'm using a 106" screen, so any softness would be much more obvious too. I personally think this DVI vs component on these receivers is more of an inconvenience than an image quality issue. Too many people are left with the impression that there's this seriously tangible difference between the 2 on these receivers.

Perhaps the display one uses makes a difference, but I'm pretty picky, and see nothing.

I hooked up a new 505a to a Sony 42" LCD and the DVI to HDMI connection didn't work. I wound up using the RCA cables. The next day I had to rewire everything as my in-laws decided to upgrade to a new glass entertainment platform. I decided to try the DVI-HDMI connection one more time and it worked great. Removing and reattaching the power cord served to act as a reboot.

Looks like a software upgrade overnight cured this one also.

My guess RaymondT is you got the handshake right the second time you set it up, by accident.
