So the green/yellow blob can be subtle?

If you Google...

"Green blob" Sony

...and click "Images" you'll see lots of good examples.

Just an update:

When the authorized Sony tech guy called me on the phone he said he could come and view the TV directly or instead I could send him a picture of the 'problem' via email and he then might be able to diagnose it that way. Well he recently replied telling me that my jpeg confirmed the problem and he was ordering the replacement optical block and he thought that it would come before Christmas.

Interesting. Based on what others have reported here it looked like maybe Sony had run out of OBs and was offering replacement LCD TVs instead. I guess a few SXRD OBs are still in stock in parts of the country.

I was thinking by now that was the case as well . But he made no mention of any difficulties re the availability of OB and as an authorized Sony tech he must see this problem frequently so you would figure that he would know.

Hi, so does that mean that Sony has decided to honour TVs with this problem past the June 2009 deadline? Or is it because you guys have purchased extended warranty. I have a KDS-R60XBR1 which started giving me problems in October.

Here's what I've read so far:

Warranty on Optical Block
Models: KDS-R50XBR1, KDS-R60XBR1.

As part of Sony's commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that it is further extending the limited warranty (parts and labour) on the optical block of KDS-R50XBR1 and KDS-R60XBR1 model SXRD Televisions until June 30, 2009, regardless of purchase date. This extended warranty does not apply to replaceable projection lamp and other parts that may be used in the televisions. All other terms of the Sony limited warranty continue to apply. If you have any questions, please contact Sony Canada's Customer Information Centre at 1-877-899-SONY (7669). For warranty repair service, please contact one of our authorized service depots.

I do have an extended Sony warranty but as I recall, I think somewhere in this thread, that the optical block of my particular SXRD, among others, is now covered until June 2010.

That's great news, does anyone have the official annoucement? I haven't been able to find anything past July 2009. And the service centre I just called didn't know anything about the extension.

I believe this annoucement covers my SXRD to June 2010:

Check to be sure.

Your luckier than me, I have an XBR1 even though I bought it in 2006. Just called SONY today and they are assessing the problem so let's see what they do to come up with my options.

Mine took about 1 hour. Might be a bit longer if your tv has collected dust back there. My guy was all set to clean the dust, too, but when we saw that the OB was worse than the one he replaced, we opted to not bother.

The tech guy told me that it would take up to an hour but in fact he spent maybe 40 minutes tops.
