wires, which model SXRD do you have and how do you know how many hours you have on the set? When did you buy it?

I've got the 60":

Model# KDS-60A2000

I bought it August 2006.

When it became drastically visible, it had 8000 hours even.

I did notice watching the Simpsons last night that the "10 business days" I need to wait for them to give me written confirmation on the W5 of getting it fixed, is GOING TO BE A LONG TIME!

I'm getting a nasty yellow/green video lag. Something moves, then a second later the yellow/green shadow catches up.

If I would have bought this TV for the $1700 that Soundsaround was clearing them out for, it wouldn't be a big deal. But for $4300, it does kind of suck.

I replaced a 4 year old Toshiba CRT RPTV (it was dying with a power on/convergence issue). Hmmm.. not having good luck here....

wires, thanks for your answers. But you still didn't tell me how you know you have 8,000 hours on the set. I have exactly the same set bought in May 2007 for $2,699 (Future Shop Victoria Day sale). No problems so far. Still on the first bulb by the way. Is there a timer in A2000 that I don't know about?

I was able to check the hours on my 55A2020 by using the instructions on this site. It's in the service menu the instructions are similar for most of the models I think.

He's accessing the service menu to find out the hours.

Google is your friend to get the code......I'm not going to post it here as the great majority of people should stay out of it (tweak the wrong thing and you can ruin the TV)

Sorry, I missed the question about "how".

I was a little stunned the first time I checked the hours. (That was 1.5 years ago). I had something like 6k hours or more! But then I worked form home, my young kids would power it up after breakfast and they'd use it during the day, and me during the night.

Now I play the "waiting game". Watching it right now is tough on a guy that's anal about perfection. :P

Wires,

What did they say exactly when you called? Did it sound at all like they were going to make you an offer for a replacement set or did they indicate that they would try and repair it?

The repair route is kinda sketchy from what I've read online. It doesn't seem like any of the replacement optical blocks work, or work for very long.

I'm glad to hear that you got to 8,000 hours before yours became bad enough to make a call - I'm only at about 1,100 hours or so on my A2020 so I hope I can get that many hours out of mine.

Are you still on your original bulb after that many hours?

They won't email me a written confirmation on anything for up to 10 business days. So right now I'm on day 3 and waiting....

I'm hoping that they replace the optical block in it just to bring it back to life. Last month I was considering going bigger, but there isn't many choices for larger than 60" right now since RPTV is dead. Sharp has had 65" for a couple of years now, Samsung just released theirs last fall. And Sony's 72" for $12k is a little a little "out there" for pricing. Especially considering my $4300 set is dead in 3.5 years....

Of course, money is tight right now, so I don't have the cash to replace it, and wouldn't have been pleased to fix it. I've heard of people getting LCD replacements at cost. But that doesn't really appeal to me. I don't want to cough up $1500 or something on a 60" when I'd like to go bigger. Of course I could buy it, sell it and get what I want, but that's a PITA.

My OEM bulb lasted 7943 hours. I was impressed since they are rated to 8000 hours. I did plug the TV into a UPS (so if the power died, I could power it down and the bulb fan would still run). I also made sure to let the fan fully shut down before moving the set (should I need to do wiring or something behind it). If I knew how weak it got at 8k hours, I would have swapped it out at 6k. It was pretty dim compared to the new bulb!

We noticed issues with our KDS50A2000 (SXRD) optical block a year ago when we started getting green tinting in both lower corners and some horizontal green strips on the bottom of the picture. Since Sony had mailed us a letter saying they would repair optical blocks until June 2010 we decided to wait and hope they finally got a good fix. This Monday we called Sony and after a few questions they quickly gave us an "E" number and authorized us to have our set repaired. We called the closest Sony authorized repair center on the same day and they said they would order the Optical Block part. Yesterday, they called and said they had the part, the repair man was here within an hour, and an hour later our set was fixed and working perfectly. This was an $1100 repair ($850 for the part) which cost us nothing. We are still unhappy because there is no evidence that the replacement part is any better then the original part which means we will probably have similar problems within the next 2 or 3 years. We do appreciate that Sony paid for the repair on a 4 year old set, but are outraged that they continued to see these rear projection sets knowing they had an inherent defect.

hankl, not sure how you would be able to tell that your replacement OB is in any way better than the original? Theoretically the new and the old should look and perform exactly the same up to the point of failure. I'm sure the original block worked perfectly when you got the set. What were you hoping the new block would do for you? Provide an even better picture/have additional features? The best you can expect when you turn it on is that it would perform exactly the same (brightness, sharpness etc.) as the original. Supposedly it should last longer because Sony has corrected whatever the fault was however only time will tell. Could you please explain what evidence you expected to see right away?

I was at Future Shop, and they sell Sony SXRD projectors for $3500. I'm assuming (big assumption here), that if they are still manufacturing the projectors in 1080P SXRD, that they have an updated optical block???

I'd just like the video back to pre-point-of-failure.

I'd be interesting in knowing what the PN of the old and new OB was. If they are just remanfacuring the broken ones, or installing new.....

Are you talking about a projector that displays video upon a wall/screen, or a rear-projection SXRD HDTV? This thread is about the latter only.

I have a SXRD RPTV, but what I was saying is they are selling SXRD projectors (still), so they may be producing new optical blocks used in there that they are fixing the RPTV's with.

Unless they have old stock on the projectors, and SXRD in general is dead, then all bets are off.....
