If I recall correctly, these Sony 60" XBR1 TV's were $6500.00 plus tax when they first came on the market. Then add in the price of the special Sony stand for it, at another $800.00 plus tax, are you are close to $8300.00 out the door!
Even today this TV is still listed on Sony's website for $5500.00. http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/ser...ductId=1001970 IMO, asking Sony customers to pay even more money to replace these defective TV's, is just beyond words... Wonder how a court would decide on this?

300sflyer, that is an old webpage with an old price. Sony stopped making any SXRD rear projection sets over a year ago. That's what is frustrating to those of us who have an SXRD and need a new optical block. Sony can't replace them with an equivalent SXRD set. They simply don't exist and the proposed replacements are actually much cheaper than the SXRDs were at the time we bought them. When I sign a contract that includes replacement of my product I assume that the replacement will be of equal value (Same $ amount) as what I originally paid. In this case Sony can't do that.
Oh and when it comes to PQ. I suspect most of us with SXRDs don't consider any of Sony's LCDs to come close to the PQ of the SXRDs nor be as free from the digital artifacts problems that plague LCD sets. That's what makes these offers from Sony a real bummer. (At least that's how I see it). |

There's a Canadian guy on AVS who goes by the name 2K8CivicSI. He just received a 60EX700 as a replacement for his fubarred Sony KDF-60WF655 (a TV that isn't near as good as an XBR1). They only charged him $300 more to step up to that model from the 60EX500.

I was one of the ones who bought a 60" XBR1 and the Sony stand back in 06. Less than a year later my OB went. Sony replaced the TV with a 60" XBR2 and new stand N/C.
The 60" XBR2 has EXCELLENT picture quality, and I have not had any OB issues with it thus far. "Knock on wood" I hope I never do. Sony better hope not too...

Bought a Sony 60 inch KDS60A2000 from A&B Sound in Victoria BC in 2006 with an A&B Platinum Plan 5yr extended warranty. The TV now has optical block problems.
A&B has gone bankrupt but the warranty appears to still be maintained (according to a Sony rep I called) by the “Walker Group”, or W3 Solutions, or WGI Service Plan (A & B Sound Platinum Plan Administrator, PO Box 91880, West Vancouver BC, V7V 4S4, 1-877-505-9980 [recorded message]). I’ve written twice with no reply so far. Have other folks dealt with this group re Sony TV/optical block issues? If so, what are your experiences? Have they resolved your TV issues? Have they worked with Sony to resolve issues? Thanks. |

I had problems with the optical block in my 60 in Sony. Sony fixed it free of charge. Now that program was on for three years and I believe it has expired. The warranty is specific to each model.
It may be adavantageous to go to the sony website and do a thorough search on optical block, if there are extended warranties in effect they will be posted there. I would suggest that anyone that has a problem contact Sony of Canada and see what they will do for you. I believe they will do something but how generous or what the offers are will be,is at their discretion. |

Inside the bulb compartment on the SXRD line of TVs there is a fan mounted right beside the bulb bracket that pulls in air from the side of the TV and expels it to the rear, and it needs to be thoroughly cleaned out on a regular basis if you have pets or are in a dusty environment. Sony didn't bother to tell anyone that, or to make it easier to get to the fan to do it. If the fan ever fails, the control circuitry is designed to shut down the TV and flash the front LED light red four times in sequence, repeatedly. The problem with Sony's design is that if the fan ever gets clogged up it can seriously slow down without triggering an electronic warning, thus letting heat build up too high, so the bulb's lifespan is shortened considerably.
In the case of melted housings clearly the entire cooling system has not been performing as specified. I have not had any melted housing issues with my 60A2000 but I've already had the fan seize a couple of times and had to thoroughly clean it out as best I could to get the cooling performance back. The job is near impossible without removing the entire rear shroud of the TV, which most consumers would be unwilling to do, but I've been working on TVs for decades so I just went ahead and did it. As a safety measure I dug into my bins of old computer parts and rigged up another fan with a spare power supply that I can turn on manually if needed. I mounted it just outside of the shroud so that it pulls air from the bulb chamber. I haven't had to use it yet, thankfully. Now that the TV is past warranty I'll wait for the Green Blob extra warranty period to expire and then cut a proper door in the shroud to be able to access the fan with a vacuum cleaner. |

Have a Sony 60A2000, I was plan to call Sony Canada for the optical block problem, but I am not sure if this TV is from Sony US or Sony Canada cause I recived this as a birthday present 2yrs ago(my girl friend bought at ebay). Any chance if Sony Canada will fix my TV if it is from US? How can I tell the serial number of the TV if it is from Canada or not?
Please Help! |
