Default May 31, 2007 cutoff for Rogers AMPS & TDMA analog phones

Word is.. Rogers is pulling Analog and TDMA service real soon. How soon you ask? as early as 6 months from now, AMPS may be completely dismantled. There are less than 40,000 active phones on the network, not to mention a good portion of them are probaly pay as u go CX's. Thats not bad at all. The reason behind this from what I heard on HOFO is that It costs so much to have an active Canada-Wide Analog network in place and they don't have enough CX using it for it to be profitable anymore. Well, I say its about time they pull the plug.. Analog is 20 year old Technology anyways.

No, your GSM Motorola V186 phone is NOT affected by TDMA/Amps shutting down.

Just a note...anyone on the old analog/TDMA network is eligble for a free upgrade to a gsm phone. Just call rogers and we can hook you up. :-)

Sure, some low-end piece of junk, and no doubt send you rocketing back to HUP Tier 1 as a result, with a 12 month minimum wait to get another. Oh, and of course the obligatory 3-year contract renewal to go with it. I have 2 lines on my account, 1 is a TDMA. I won't be upgrading it until they shove something very good down my throat and with 13 years tenure I know it had better be good and I won't have to use my accrued HUP status in order to get it.

Well you have to understand...the reason we offset the cost of a phone for you is because u agree to another 3 year term...if u want to get a device for no cost and no contract renewal then go back to lala land cause it just doesn't happen...though if u would be interested in a gsm phone and would agree to a 3 yearm term I can guarntee you I could give it to u for close to $0 if not $0 and it wouldn't be a low end phone...I can promise u that...but that's just me...I pride myself of good customer service especially to someone with tenure such as yourself. Hope to hear from u soon!

Oh I'm not questioning any of that, and certainly not your good intentions. But here's my thought process as far as this goes. My key argument to what you said though is in your statement is that right now any migration to GSM would still be client-initiated. Soon it won't be, and there's a big difference there.

There is absolutely zero chance that Rogers is going to say "Sorry, we are cancelling your line of 13+ years because we no longer support the technology.". I'm sure they will try in the meantime to entice people to convert as their olds phones die and through HUP, etc. But at some point they will have to bite the bullet (especially for long-standing accounts with 3-digit monthly average spending) and just cough up something in order to keep the account from being lost. Much in the same way as the cable side will someday have to give away digital terminals to all those who have no inclination to switch before they can do away with the analog signals at some point in the future.

It doesn't behoove me at this point to make the move (if no other circumstance requires me to) as the "incentive" will only increase as the date of reckoning nears. At that time I'm sure a contract extention wouldn't be a part of it (as the conversion wouldn't be client-initiated) for a low-end phone, and for something that would secure an extention a high-end phone (with the tenure and high spending considered as well) will be available for zero dollars or very close to it. By that time, 3G phones will be out!

That's all I'm saying. And that's my game plan, since my TDMA line is my wife's and she has no need or desire to upgrade and I'm sure as heck not using my Tier IV HUP for this purpose!

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out though!

We'll see you in a few months, when your phone says "NO SERVICE" meanwhile every body elses will say "ROGERS"

Whats the big deal with people being dreadfully CHEAP now a days? spend the money and migrate to GSM, you can pick up a cheap phone and a SIM card for probaly arround $25 or less if you look arround. I upgraded my mom over to GSM a few years back because its not worth the hasle of having her TDMA phone not working in the event of an emergency. Sobeit

With respect, the issue here is not about being "cheap". Trust me, if I had any need or desire to upgrade that phone I would and the cost wouldn't be an issue. The issue in this case is being told that you have to do something you wouldn't otherwise be inclined to do. I understand that technology evolves, and I'm very much in favour of that. But I also understand business, and that I won't wake up one day to see "No Service" on my phone as someone will have gone to great lengths to ensure that doesn't happen before the switch is shut off on TDMA. I'm simply waiting it out, in lieu of any personal need to upgrade at this time, and in full knowledge that "the best is yet to come", so to speak, in terms of the incentive to migrate.

Sorry if that offends you.

people who wait till the end-of-the-line on old outdated technology is what causes NEW technology to not advance. Sorry if that offends you!

It doesn't, don't worry. Your thoughts on my personal situation, one way or the other, just aren't that important to me to be considered offensive.
