One of the mods should start a official 92U thread and sticky it since it will probally be a very popular tv and much talked about.

Well pulled the trigger on a 52" 62U after waiting for the 92U for a few months. I got a great deal during boxing week ($3500CAD). Brought it home and I do have horizontal banding.
The authorized dealer agreed to replace the set but mentioned that they are aware of this banding issue and suspect that it can take several weeks before a replacement set will be available due to back order. They agreed to test for banding before leaving the new set with me. Overall (to bring some optimism into this thread), this is a fantastic set overall. The image quality is beyond my expectation and I'm especially impressed with the blacks and lack of ghosting (which I was expecting...this being an LCD and all). Great monitor overall. |

You do realize that in a few weeks that you wait to get your replacement set (which will still probably have banding) that the D92U will probably be out?

While the 92 will be out, it is expected to cost about 30% more than the same size 62 series.

IMHO, the features of the 92u don't merit the 30% price increase. I'm hoping for 2 things; that the 92u will drive down the price of the 62u and that they'll fix or at least minimize the banding issue. If those things happen, I'll get another 62u for the bedroom.

Some of the specs on the 92U are very nice however, and in the long run, its the 92 for me.
Here's hoping that the street price isn't as high as the hints on the premium over the 62U. |

What is the best price you can get right now on the Sharp 52D62U in Canada?

Hi,
I'm in the process of buying a new tv. I went to Brault and Martineau store to check the LC42D62U with my girlfriend. We have check every angle we could and check also for banding problems. We didn't find anything on the set on the floor. The price is acceptable. I can have it at 2500$ can. I'm aware that some sets have banding problem but it's seems that the problems is more in the 46 and 52 size. I'm not sure if I take the extra warranty that the store sells so I hope that if I do pick that sets that I won't have any problem or I will have to deal with Sharp. What should I do. We love the set and it's only the banding problems that makes us scared to pick that set. What do you think? Should I buy one? People that bought this model, do you had any banding problems? Let me know as I will purchase my new set this week-end. Thanks a lot for your help. |

Sears had the 42D62U on sale for $2300 (Can) with a free drill, I got a smaller store to price match the $2300 (of course no drill though, not that I needed another
You should be able to get close to that price I am sure if two stores, one a chain and one small, can both do it. Added to that it was the last set in town, I called everywhere, and even though they knew that it was very limited they still sold it at that price. My 42" set had no banding, it was a 611 model. Ask to check if the serial number starts with 611 or not, it's on the outside of the box so they can check it easy enough. More then happy with my new TV as a computer monitor, I might hook the HD box up to it this weekend to see what TV looks like on it, out of curiousity Just ask what the return policy is should the TV have a banding issue, if they say they have never heard of it just slap the salesman. If you are satisfied with the return policy, just offer $2300 (or lower if you want) and hold the credit card up in the air, surprising at what they will jump at when you do that. Just be ready for them to sell you everything else you can imagine to make up their profit margin back though, just keep saying no.

Thanks for the info. You think that the 611 series has no problem. The problem is that at this store in particular I won't be able to see the serial number because they do delivery and they pick which one they want.
Ok so it wasn't a special deal or anything at that price? You know the salesman at the store told me that he didn't heard of that banding problem. That's a good price at 2300$. When did you purchase your set. |

How do you check for banding? I have a set with a 610 serial number but a very high one at 610989### and see no obvious banding.

I'm ready to buy the 46D62U model, but I have 2 questions after reading this thread.
1- Are all model starting with serial 611 are free of banding? 2- If the banding is cause by the backlight unit (as suggested Here) can I have a banding free unit and with time start to see banding because the BLU is starting to wear? Thanks a lot. DM

I received a call from the sharp service center yesterday regarding my banding 52" 62U. They said that they are well aware of the problem and will replace the set no questions asked.
They also said that Sharp is aware of the problem and is producing sets that don't have the issue now. My name is on a list for a set that will not have any banding (pre-screened). It may take a week or a month they are not sure because they are back ordered. I then called the Sharp customer care center and they confirmed that my file has all this in writing. Also, they are going to start my one year warranty once I receive the new set. In the mean time I can keep my current tv (the banding is minor and I don't really notice it 90% of the time). Still love this TV. |

I bought my set early December, there was no specials or rebates or anything at the time, I just walked into the store after seeing the sears ad.
The salesman that I talked to didn't know either, but the manager was right there too and said ya he knew and that Sharp was replacing any set that might have banding, others have reported Sharp was taking care of this issue fairly well and not just leaving people out to dry (like you read in the Westinghouse threads). They should be able to tell you what number would be shipped, if they can't get it somewhere else. The 611 series should be the start of production after some changes in the factory (from what I think I read) and should have a much higher chance for a banding free set. Banding doesn't mean the set is screwed, just that sometimes with the right solid background you may see some uneven lighting, lots reported they didn't know they had any until they went looking for it. The chance of banding is the only real issue that I have read with this set, and Sharp says they will fix it. Good TV for less then other comparable sets out there. Just like any big electronics purchases the ability to return it in 30 days is the best way to go if you are unsure that an item is really what you are after.
