I just received my first telly. Yeah, I've stuck it out without one for about three years; I managed to purchase one for my kids before, but my wife and I, being film freaks, decided to get one for ourselves.
The Samsung 42" Widescreen RP (HCWM4216W) was our choice. It came, we plugged it in, and we watched films and played my MexBox. Two main issues that I have noticed thus far: 1. A 2" faint grey bar appearing either on the rigth side or both sides when screen goes black (between scenes). From what I have heard, it's an aspect issue when watching non 16:9 films. 2. When watching films, there is a noticeable change in colour tones from one shot to the next. If two faces take up the shot, the tone goes very warm, almost orange. When there is a small face in the shot, the tone is very neutral. It's almost as if the TV is compensating for the abundance of certain colours, and the shortage of others. This happens rather fast between shots. This doesn't however occur when the same shot holds for a long time. There are no colour fluctuations then. I initially had my TONES set to Normal in the TV menu, but now I have switched to Cool1. This seems to have helped, but the colour fluctuation is still there, but just barely noticeable. Is this a normal RPTV issue, Samsung issue, or just a busted up telly? BTW, this telly is great. Looks good in my limited condo space; it is a very nice product. I previously thought that all RPTVs are like the ones from 20 years ago. I was wrong.

Looks like my friend has joined the forum ...welcome aboard
Guru's of the forum, is this something an ISF Calibration can fix? I already recommended that he pick up a copy of Avia. thoughts?

Here's what I did. Since I purchased it from Best Buy, I went to get it exchanged -- no hassles, quick and easy. The replacement, although the colours look much punchier and deeper (sexier picture overall) I still see the faint white strip and the colours still fluctuate, although not as significantly. BUT!!!! Get this, I have a dead pixel. It's actually more like a dead cherry on the screen. It looks as if it's behind the screen. Guess what? I'll be exchanging this one, too. Then, I'll call Samsung Canada, that I'll be more than happy to keep exchanging the telly until they call me up and fix this shite and give me a fruit basket for my birthday.
All I'm saying is this: Fight back with David Horowitz!

As a fellow Samsung RPTV owner, all I can say is:
"WELCOME TO THE HORROR OF SAMSUNG RPTV" ps: I'm already on my 4th replacement, and the last one one lasted for a week. It's been a month after my 4th relacement turned green on me, and still nothing from Samsung yet. |

My apology to post this in the public area, but for some reason I can't reply to your pm. So let me try this.
It's usually hard to tell whether a telly works properly (especially CRT RPTV) when it hasn't been running for at least 50 hours (NOT 50 hours straight; turning on and off is part of breaking-in procedure). If the picture is soft, it seems like the latest batch of Samsung have became soft. Don't know why. But it IS the TV. RPTV, in general, can not have sharp focus at their corners. I'm waiting, however, for another replacement from Samsung. I insisted that the next replacement SHOULD be the one with HDCP DVI. Yep, I'm already on my FIFTH TV and it's still not working properly. hope it answers your question |

i too have had the faint strip during dark scenes, however, if I unplug my component cables and use a standard RCA input, the strip is gone.....
I'm considering buying better compenent cables to see if that fixes the problem. |
