Default Rogers HD PPV

How come there's not more movies in HD on the Rogers PPV?

I realize they only have 2 HD channels, but I think this month I counted 3-5 movies in HD (the last page of the monthly movie entertainment mag).

Thx

Because people aren't buying them.

As a guy who used to view the Rogers PPV stats every week, rest assured they are followed closely. Rogers works hard to air movies that sell! (every wonder why there is so much porn on PPV, it's because it sells!)

If customers were buying HD PPV then rest assured Rogers would be putting more on!

A bit of a chicken and egg situation. If they don't show anything you can't watch it. If you don't watch they won't show it. Seems to me they have to start the ball rolling by showing a few more interesting movies and rotate them faster so consumers would have a reason to come back for more.

I've had HD for about 10 months now and I have bought maybe 3 HD PPV movies.

I usually just wait until it's on TMN HD.

Digital channels were after my time but from what I've been told the answer is no. When you order a PPV movie a database entry is made because a transaction is made.

Even if it was technologically possible, which I doubt it is, if they recorded everytime you switched a channel, you would have terabytes of information everyday and the Rogers servers would grind to a halt!

I have to agree with the chicken and egg analogy. I would love to order HD PPV from rogers but the selection is very poor.

Not only are there not many movies available but the ones chosen to air in HD were not exactly stellar movies to begin with. The hit and/or blockbuster movies rarely make it to HD PPV.

THere is likely fear of piracy from the studios of offering high quality PPV content. Unfortunatlely this only exacerbates the problem.

But this info would be very valuable and Rogers could sell it for mucho dinero to BBM et al. There is a discussion going on in one of the other forums right now about BBM booklets and I brought up this issue.

Terabytes of info is nothing now! Soon you will be able to buy terabytes sized HDs.

Assuming Rogers was able to track such data -- even as a representative sampling just as BBM does -- the value to Rogers would be more if they kept it to themselves and used it to drive renegotiations with broadcasters and in making future choices of what channels to launch and at what price.

So, perhaps Rogers can track this (at least in aggregate). And if they can, I doubt if they would sell it to BBM et al so competitors could use it (ie. Bell).

As I said, to my knowledge current technology does not permit this. The actual amount of information is not so much the issue as the pounding on databases.

You could say the same thing about scanner data from supermarkets but they sell this info to marketing organizations and/or share it with manufacturers. For example - Loblaws will sell they data on their sales to ad agencies or they may provide it to P&G if they have marketing agreements to do so and do track special promotions - i.e. how much do sales of Ivory Soap go up if we put in a special display.

Ok. Can we please stay on the topic which is why Rogers doesn't have more HD PPV.

Good point!

I've been dying to watch a movie in HD, but the selection is not only limited (same stuff repeated over and over) but not appropriate to showcase the new technology. Doogal???! Hoodwinked???! There are some good movies, for sure (Brokeback Mountain, Mrs. Henderson Presents, A New World) but not exactly what I would pick for showing off high-ded. Show me an action/adventure movie, like Goblet of Fire (even though I bought the DVD, I'd pay $6 to watch it in HD), Aeon Flux (don't care if it's not that good, it would be impressive in High Def).

Regarding the point about Rogers paying attention to what people purchase -- are they really lining up to view Hoodwinked in HD? Dave Chappell's Block Party? Brokeback Mountain? Doogal? Yet these movies keep appearing in the IPG.

P.S. I hope someone from Rogers is reading this. I've got $$$ to spend on PPV.
