Default No 4200HD from Rogers :(

Rogers will not be adopting the 4200HD, sorry to say. I found this out from Michael Allen on a recent Online with Rogers TV show. He states that the 4200HD has no other features over the 3100HD except for the cable modem. He doesn't know or realize the other new features like scaling, down convert to SD, etc., etc.

That would be odd. Because I believe there is a letter posted from someone at Rogers stating they really never wanted the 3100HD. They wanted the 3250HD but decided to go with the 3100HD rather than waiting until whenever.

The 3100HD has some major deficiencies. Like no HD overlay in the IPG. Or any overlay on the HD display. I don't think it serves Rogers long term needs.

It may be that they go with the 3250HD over the 4200HD. The former is the same features as the 4200HD sans modem. That is a real possibility.
I wouldn't mind either if it had an active Firewire port.

Also, it is inevitable that they will have to go with the 3250HD or 4200HD sometime in the next year as their supply of 3100HD depletes.

Why would I want a cable modem built into my cable box? Just curious...

The easy answer is that you can surf on your TV - much faster than with WebTV and products of that ilk. When you also build wireless capability into the box, like in the 4200, you can run your computer off that cable modem as well.

Ok, I thought this was a "true" cable modem in that it had an RJ45 output for connection to a PC.

I have to call a vapourware alert on this and most of the other "coming soon" HD boxes like the 3250HD and the 800HD.

SA just announced the 4200HD in December. Given that there is probably relatively limited rollout of the 3100HD and the 8000 I don't expect next gen boxes for a while yet. Probably at least a year.

Much as I would like to get a 4200HD or 8000HD I'm pretty sure most of the 3100HD owners/renters out there wouldn't give it up now even with it's warts.

Yeah, John has it right: "From my cold dead hands"

I'd want the 3250HD ASAP though. I'd like a better EDTV upconvert, or let the set do it.

In fact, I suspect the good part of the FOX bashing that goes on is because of the poor quality of the EDTV upconvert. Not the poor quality of EDTV, which should be DVD like.

Anyone know what the recommend bit-rate is for 16:9 widescreen EDTV?
