Hey jsebean, if you decide to put up an antenna I'd put it high and get a fair sized one.Being on the 340 and not next to the water you'll probably have a harder time getting anything.

When you run your TVFool reports run several instead with different antenna heights. Altitude is usually a good thing, but not always.

Hey Taguy, how's reception this weekend? I know its not supposed to be tropo, but I'm picking up Portland pretty clear with my m4 aimed out towards the light house.

I am new to this and not good with electronics. I would like to know what is the best option for an aerial for my location?

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...de657d2d92a759

I hope this works??

Thank you; Wayne

Default TV Fool for Parkdale

It's not looking too good for you. With these results, I think you would need to raise your antenna higher than the 20 feet you indicate, and get the highest gain antenna you can find. Is there any chance there are closer repeaters nearby your location? Nearby repeaters might be easier to receive than the main stations in Halifax such as CBHT and CJCH.

Thank you for the reply. I can possibly get close to 40 feet with a tower. How do you go about finding repeater towers? I will have to try more research as I am quite illiterate when it comes to these things.

Again Thank you; Wayne

If you experiment with TV Fool by increasing your antenna height (try 40-feet high), it will indicate if there are TV repeaters anywhere near you. For example, CBHT-6 to your NNW shown on your TV Fool image is a repeater of CBHT. However, in this case, CBHT-6 is weaker for you than the main station CBHT in Halifax.

Hey there,

New to OTA television, but with the advent of Netflix, NHL Gamecenter and Apple TV I am becoming very interested.

I was thinking of cutting my cable TV. But thought for sure I would be able to pick up: CBC, CTV and Global all with a small antenna next to my TV. I likely cannot put an antenna on the roof of my apartment.

However after reading here and doing a TV Fool Signal analysis (http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...9900723d00b718), it looks fairly grim actually that I'd be able to clearly receive any of these channels with this type of setup.

Do I have any other options?

Nope, unfortunately the only 2 DTV stations on your TVFool would be a challenge for even the most powerful Deepest Fringe outdoor OTA setups.

Here at this site if you go up a level above this OTA Forum you can see that all your other TV reception options in Canada are covered in great detail, but we only discuss OTA here.

Mojo027, you should be able to get Global analog on 9 with antenna near a window. It should convert to digital by 2016.
CTV analog on 6 may be a bit trickier. Hopefully, they will convert to digital at some point.
CBC your only option is online streaming.

Hi,

wouldn't the Winegard HD7084P more appropriate in my case instead of the Winegard HD7080P ?
I was looking at the VHF reception range, approximately 80 miles for the 7084 Vs 50 miles for the 7080.
The distance from Fredericton to Mount Champlain is about 70 miles.

Also, coming to the antenna sizes, I read Width: 110 in., is it indeed so large or am i missing something?

Thank you!
Alex

Default Advice for Metallo

Hi Metallo,

I took a closer look at the Winegard antennas recommended for you on the TVFool forum.

Yes, they really are that big. These are not the right antennas for your situation. North American TV is divided into three bands: VHF-lo (channels 2-6, the original band since 1950's, requiring very large antennas), VHF-hi (channels 7-13, requiring somewhat large antennas) and UHF (channels 14-51, requiring smaller antennas). The HD7084P and HD7080P are designed to cover all three bands and the reason they are so large is to pull in VHF-lo channels 2-6.

In your case, the hardest channel to get will be channel 9. According to TVFool, you are 40 miles from this station and there are some hills in the way. So it will help you to get the antenna as high as possible. If you can pull in a solid channel 9 you will also get a solid channel 12. The local CBC channels is very strong and should be no problem.

Therefore I recommend you get an antenna designed for the VHF-hi band (channels 7-13). I would try the Antennas Direct C5. It's not too big, it's very good at VHF-hi and has a bit of UHF reception that should pull in the local CBC station. Your TVFool says that the higher you can go, the better.

Good luck! If you don't get the antenna set up in time for the Olympics, you may be able to hook a computer to your TV and watch the online live streaming. If you have a fast connection, it might look OK.

Hi Ralph,

thanks for your advise, the ClearStream5 seems to be the right antenna for my situation, although I have some concern regarding the UHF.

I want to install the antenna at the satellite dish mast on the roof which I do not need, however, the antenna would point south which is fine for the Hi-VHF stations but not really for the UHF as it is north east.

As you can see from the picture below, the dish is presently on the garage roof and it is pointing to south so I guess I would get better results placing it on top of the higher roof in order to get a clear UHF reception.

Once placed on the higher roof, would the present mast be long enough or should I get an extension?

If I extend it, would you recommend to use guy wires?

Thank again for you help

Alex

Actually I realized that if I select 'pending' in the TV Fool signal locator I do get channel 31 at 156 degrees so I should be fine if this is transmitting. I guess my best bet is to try the existing mast and see
