Larger Hard Drive for the 6412 limited to 160 GB by firmware

As many have complained about, the DCT 6412/2000 has a hard drive that is too small. Can a large one be added in place of the 120GB? Does this sound like a good idea?

At this time it can not be done.
The firmware limits the drives size to 120gigs no mater what size you install in the 6412.
It would be nice if an external SATA drive could be hooked up to it, but the port is not active.

I have a question if I have a 6208 with the 80 gig drive do you think since the software update it would now accept the 120 gig size?

You know I am not sure about that, I wonder if the same firmware update went to both the 6208 and the 6412.
If not maybe the 6208 still has a firmware limit of 80gigs
One could try, but of course if you tamper with it and cant get it to work and then can not get your old drive to work you will have voided your warranty.
Let us know what you do.

Each version of DCT, at least the 64xx & 34xx, have there own software upgrade agendas. It isn't 'one size fits all' thing. Check out this great Wikibook link: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Firmware_and_Software There's a tone of info & links about the DCT64XX (all phases) & DCT3412. There's no reference to the 6208, so my wild guess is the F/W would be untouched by an update meant for a 6412, barring certain commonalities between the two DCTs.
IMHO, even though an upgrade to allow for a larger HDD would probably be easier & less expensive to implement, the only way we'll get a larger HDD is w/ a brand new model of DCT, starting w/ the mythical 6416. It does exist on the Moto site, & probably that's where it will stay (AHEM, paging CCs, MSG. for you at the front desk, follow the little red LED). ;)

What I find amazing is that in this day and age, no one has figured out a way around this. Hardware hackers love a challenge: see the numerous Xbox extensions or most recently, the Apple laptop booting Windows (pre-bootcamp). Does the questionable legality scare away people?

Its ashame as the 6412 is a great piece of hardware, save the rather small (nowadays) 120GB drive. It seems like a tease to provide the physical SATA ports, but not allowing them to be useful.

*sigh*

Yes, it is a shame to have those ports and they be inactive...I'd have no problem going out and buying a 250GB external SATA drive to plug in, if it would work...heck, I'd even buy it from Shaw if they offered it and wanted to make it proprietary.

The problem with using an off the shelf e-sata is with the formatting. The default format is ntfs...the motorola pvrs use the IBM GPFS file system . Because the e-sata is not accessable by the system formatting device file the external drive will not be recognised as a device. However if one where to pre-format an e-sata drive with the IBM GPFS then it maybe the external device will work....all that Shaw says is that the use of the port is not supported, which does not mean that it might not be possible. Pehaps the same thing applies to external USB drives.

flyte... that's an excellent point.
I have a 6412 with Cogeco cable and share the same issues as everyone else here with Shaw regarding hard drive space and unusable connections on the PVR. I am sure there are many others with different cable providers as well that are interested in this. Perhaps we should all be together on this one...

How do you know this?
I can’t find the treads right now you will have to search, but I have read numerous threads about how the firmware limits the hard drive size.
People have tried to put in a larger hard drive and yet in the settings still shows a 120gig drive.
If you are able to install a larger drive let us know.
This will of course void your warranty so at your own risk

Says who?

People change hard drives on modern equipment all the time without "voiding their warranty".

IAC, it would take about 10 minutes to replace the hard disk with the original before swapping it with Shaw if a problem arose.

I have ordered the Seagate Barracuda 160 GB 7200.7 SATA-ST3160023AS drive (US$48.00 on eBay) used in the 6416 and will drop it into one of my 6412s and see.

So what's with your big hangup about warranty??!!

I can't remember which, but there are multiple reports on failure :(
I believe those early reports related to older Phase II 6412 units - before the Phase 3 and 6416 units were released. I can't see Moto having different firmware on the 6412P3 and 6416P3 units, but I'll soon find out firsthand.

Its ones personal preference, I was just letting you know.
I change hard drive in computers on a regular basis and some PC's or other electronic equipment have the warranty void if removed or tampered with stickers.
Just in case a problem happens and you take it back they can say well you messed with it sorry.

It doesn't bother me at all. Mess around with it let us know your results. Hope you can get a larger hard drive to work. Id love to be able to put a larger one in mine.

I Successfully Upgraded The HDD In My DCT6412!!!

Well ... in spite of all of the huffing and puffing, whining and lack of accurate and constructive information on this forum, I went out and bought the EXACT drive that is in the DCT6416 unit - the 160GB Seagate ST3160023AS. It cost me all of $50.

I unplugged my 120GB drive in my DCT6412PIII and plugged in the new 160GB drive.

I powered up my Moto. It took a while to "find itself" but when it woke up it had a 160GB drive with the exact partitions that the DCT6416 has:
Code:
Partitions:
System = 238 MB
GPFS = 2,861 MB
PVR Index = 1,907 MB
PVR Content 147,581 MB
I have increased my DCT6412PIII data capacity by 33% for $50.

Done deal.

My next task will to check a 300GB drive and also multiple drives.

Good for you. Let us know if you can actually record (about) 27 hours of HD onto it. Excuse my ignorance, but are you on Shaw?

At US$48, plus shipping, etc, etc, I'm sure the landed cost wasn't $50, but inexpensive nonetheless.

Questions:
1. Do you think that if you put the Maxtor Quick View HD back in it would revert back?
2. How are you going to do miltiple drives?
3. Could you provide pictures for us?
Thanks!

The new addition to the QuickView portfolio of hard
drives includes the following features:
• Storage capacity up to 300GB, which translates into 300
hours of standard definition recording or 54 hours of
high definition recording available.†

So according to the above, this would work: http://www.gogocity.com/VolumePrice.asp?dept_id=211&pf_id=CO02HDD0822

Finally, what seems to be solid proof. Now, let's see it in action.

Yes I am on Shaw.

Last night I set it up to record PBS-HD (continuous HD programming) and as of this moment it is at 831 minutes and "53% Full". This suggests that it will hold about 26 hours when full.
