I use the amplified Terk on the 13th floor of my building, and it works great!

HOWEVER, chances are the amplifier will only work properly in places with very little RF interference. Too much interference, and the amplifier will amplify that instead of the TV signal. I used to live in a condo where I couldn't find an RF amp that worked properly to the point the FM tuner in my receiver would only work properly with the antenna OFF. A neighbour might have had some defective equipment somewhere.

Luckily, the Terk TVHD antenna uses a removable in-line amp. You can try it both with and without the amp, and use what works best for you.

In my personal experience (and seen again by others on this forum) the amplification system on the Terk HDTVa MUST be plugged in for the antenna to function properly. Just flip the switch to "off".

I recommend you purchase an antenna from a retailer with a good return policy and try several different models until you find the one that's best for your situation.
While it is true there are sometimes trade-offs between different antennas, the problem with the trial and error approach is because of changes in signal strength throughout the year, what works well for you today, may not tomorrow. It is better to understand your situation and pick the best antenna for you. When it comes to indoor antennas, there aren't many choices in types of antennas (mainly because of size limitations), but there are a few.

ive used various types of indoor antennas(Terk fdtva,RCA Cant1650,RCA Mant510 and my present Terk HDTVA),ive used them for long stretches, through good weather and bad.the Terk HDTVA is the best out of the bunch for MY location.and Downbeat is correct, the amplified version needs to be plugged in, in order to function properly.
