Horizontal lines and white noise on Sammy TV from Rogers Digital STB

Wow.. Can anyone please help me.. I just picked up a digital Rogers box and hooked it up to my Samsung 50inch plasma HDTV... I have these horizontal lines some white and some green running up the screen... Also way to much hiss when watching TV.....
I unplugged all my other tv's thinking perhaps they caused this interference but to no avail..... These intermittent scan lines stop when I play a DVD movie.... No external receiver... Very simple hookup... Rogers box to the digital in on back of TV using component RCA's supplied by Rogers.. Rogers suggest using their component hookup as opposed to HDMI... my TV does both....
Wierd... 10 years back I used to have the same problem but only noticed these scan lines on my projector screen which was 8by5... Whenever I turned on my track lights via low voltage dimmer the lines would run faster and faster up the screen... When i turned off the dimmer.. the lines would disappear... Never had the problem since because I got rid of the projector and just used regular cable.....
Also... I used a regular Rogers cable box on my plasma and did not have this interference... Only now since I just got the High Definition Rogers digital box do I have these horrible interfering scan lines and noise hiss.....
Can anyone please help me... I think its a grounding issue... perhaps within the house with one the receptacles or perhaps with Rogers itself... I have a large grey Rogers box on the outside of my home....Riddled with cable..
Also... How about those Electrical boxes for sale on Ebay and at the Future shop that say they CLEAN electrical current... Do these things actually work?
ANY IDEAS... I'M LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a look at the following Digital Home FAQs. This is usually ingress due to a poor connection of some type.

- Things to check first. (Check, unplug, replug all cables, etc)
- Tips for SA STBs (once the issue is cleared up.)

What's the make/model of the STB?

Clean power is not the issue since you don't get the problem with the DVD player, etc.

I just bought a samsung 42" plasma EDTV, I have this scanning white line problem while watching roger's tv (hd 3250), also I have the same problem with connecting a computer to the plasma too. Also notice it on watching dvd with black background. But it will die down and go away after awhile. I am thinking it's a tv issue and I called the place and they are sending a tech. to my house and take a look at it. If it's samsung's problem, I will have to return it and get something else. What a pain! I will keep you updated on how it goes.

I had a similar problem with a Sony LCD and an 8300 connected with component cables. I solved it be going to the HDMI connection and using the component cables to connect the DVD player.

My samsung ended up to be just a bad tv, they switch a new one to me and it's now working flawlessly.

I'm having the exact same problem as LimeBoy, its quite frustrating.

Horizontal scan lines appear & audible noise/buzzing using the Explorer 3250HD on a new Samsung 46" LCD LNT4665F (connected via monster component cables).

This problem only occurs when watching TV (both HD and SD programming). Infact the problem persists even when going into the Explorer setup wizard. I've tried using different component cables and even used regular RCA cables, same problem

DVDs and blu-rays play fine so I know its not the TV thats causing the problem.

Any ideas?? I'm at a loss! Thanks

Which formats have you enabled in the advanced setup wizard? Do you have the STB set to "passthrough"? Have you properly set up the TV - often if the contrast or backlight is too high, these problems are more apparent. Perhaps you have a ground loop issue with the STB?

Backlight & Contrast are both at reasonable levels. The lines are apparent on every setting within the STB (pass through 1080i currently)

Because of the buzzing sound I'm beginning to think this s a ground loop issue. However if this is the case, wouldnt I have noticed these lines on the previous TV? I've basically ruled out everything but the box itself

Passthrough is meaningless if you only have 1080i activated. It means that 480i and 720P get converted to 1080i. You may wish to run the advanced setup wizard and activate 720P and 480i Standard, in addition to 1080i and see if that makes any difference on the 720P and SD channels. You can confirm the output format on the front of the STB and with a button on the TV remote which shows what the TV is receiving - button labelled recall, or display or info or something like that.

It is possible you have a bad box, but I'd check the other things first.

OK - Rogers tech was here yesterday, ensured the cable was in good shape & made sure the line was grounded, and the problem is still there: same horizontal lines, same buzzing sound

He swapped cable boxes and it seems the issue was resolved. After he left I realised he had left his testing cable box behind, so I hooked it up and then I realised the problem is still there! Arrrgg

Turns out when the cable box is setup to display the grey bars on the left and right side of SD programming the issue was just harder to see on this all grey screen. However once the bars were turned back to the black colour it was much more apparent (still evident in all programming too).

Argggg x2... Anyone have any ideas?

A few weeks ago I started to hear humming through my TV speakers, using HDMI, even with the volume @ zero. I got rid of it by turning off the TV speakers & only using my AVR. I thought the humm was just an issue with the TV until I saw the hoz.lines issue here. I saw the lines on Saturday after I accidently switched the TV to component, but saw none with HDMI. Today I checked component & lines are gone?? Then I turned the TV speakers back on & humm is still there. I still had L/R audio cables plugged to the TV and when I unplugged them from the 8300 the humm stopped. So safe to assume its coming from my 8300HD. I tried to make a quick ground from the 8300 to my AVR but it makes no difference. Might be a poor ground connection, will fool around later, stuff is to hard to get at. All my AV equip. is plugged into an UPS. I don't want to swap out my 8300, & loose my recordings, to see if it will make a difference though. Will post if I find a real fix. PS.. I reboot my 8300 ALOT.

I just watched 2 shows, L&O SVU & Cane on component & the lines are there again. So far I have seen this on 1 PBS, 1 CTV & 2 Global programs. Often subtle but if you pause it is more noticeable. I replugged all my cables except to the TV with no difference. I then checked my antenna feed of analog 5 & 9 & there are no lines but I see them faintly on the Rogers SD feed. In fact my feed has a cleaner PQ than the Rogers SD feed. This reminds me of the old days of bad analog cable feeds. This is a Rogers outfeed issue.
For those calling Rogers, keep track of when & what channels/shows you noticed it on. Get a ticket (DSR)written up. Ask for the name & ID of the CSR you talk to, if, sorry I mean when, you have to call them back to see why it's not fixed! I would love to hear them tell us to use HDMI, which they don't support.

I fixed the horizontal bar/hum problem by buying a surge protector that has the coax cable plugs. Seems the cable was grounded coming into the house but not INSIDE the house itself - the surge protector has fixed that.

New problem though. This power bar has cut my signal strength, HD channels are visibly worse than before and some others pixelate to the point of not watching.

Ill have to get Rogers back to fix properly, now at least I know what the problem is.

Lines have not been as noticeable lately but humm was still pretty loud. I checked & Rogers had grounded the cable at the grey entrance box to my above ground hydro line conduit. Yesterday I loosened the ground clamp on the conduit, scraped the paint off & retightened. So far I haven't seen any hint of lines & the humm is gone.
